We love to hear stories about the impact that Sherman Library & Gardans has had in the lives of others.

Meet Sharon whom shares her impact story here…

“Sherman Library and Gardens has proved to be a wonderful addition to my life, since joining the Docents in 2017. My background and love for travel, training, art and history have all been enhanced by this very special place.
The Gardens provide such a variety of plants and flowers from all over the world, and sharing this exceptional collection with guests is so rewarding. The Gardens are beautiful and change with every season, so the portraits and landscapes are always new and different.
The history and artwork held by the Library is so interesting and holds some fascinating collections. Working on art provenance and historical papers projects with the library staff has been enlightening and such a pleasure to pursue. Just a wonderful place to be.” Sharon - Docent

Last year, Sherman Library & Gardens Horticulture Director Kyle Cheesborough began studying, scouting, and collecting various mariposa lily (Calochortus spp.) endemic to Southern California.
🌱In an effort to conserve and bring attention to this beautiful native species, Kyle sent the seeds to public gardens in our area and began growing some at Sherman Library & Gardens.
🪴One year later, this small bulb is the result of a year’s worth of cultivation! This species, Calochortus weedii var. intermedius, has a very limited range – most of which occurs in Orange County. Considered rare, threatened, or endangered in California, the intermediate mariposa lily is in need of conservation efforts at public gardens to ensure its long-term survival.
🌼In the future, these plants will be incorporated into the living collections at Sherman Library & Gardens, and will serve as repositories for the naturally occurring wild genetics. Conservation in action!

“You had me at hydrangea”!
Something magical happened when I became part of the Sherman Library and Gardens (SLG) community. 🌸 I had been looking for ways to make the next chapter of my life have special meaning, and check off some items on my bucket list. SLG has given me that opportunity tenfold.

I have been a lifelong gardener, travel enthusiast, and artist. I have been fortunate to have painted in some of the world’s most beautiful gardens. So, when I retired from over 35 years in the newspaper publishing and television broadcasting industries, how fortunate I was to have SLG just around the corner.
☀️ Here in Southern California, it’s all about a calm demeanor imparted by the sun, the beach, warm sand, fresh air, delightful dining, and plant life burgeoning with color. That color is exemplified in the synergy of visual delight on display year-round at SLG.

✔️ I am a “list maker”. Here are the three most important goals for my next decade:
1. Spend time nurturing friendships
2. Spend time nurturing the planet by being a good steward in the garden and sharing my art and talents for the benefit of the next generation, and
3. Make each day fun and be a beacon of hope.
Being an SLG volunteer offers me an opportunity to achieve all those goals. I get gentle exercise by helping groom the gardens with the guidance of world-class horticulturalists. I participate in fun social events with amazing volunteers (now friends) and staff (now friends) from SLG.
I am happy that SLG emphasizes education for those who appreciate the beauty and importance of championing horticulture endeavors in today’s and tomorrow’s world. I believe that SLG encourages the relationship between art and nature.
I am excited about embracing the “Grow The Gardens” plans to prepare these lovely botanical gardens for a sustainable future.
I love the experience of SLG and encourage anyone who seeks a friendly atmosphere of camaraderie to join me and the nearly 100 others as an SLG volunteer – it’s good for your soul.

The program provides free bussing and field trips to Sherman Library & Gardens for elementary school students in public schools within Orange County. Last school year, Sherman became a classroom for more than 1,600 second-, third-, and fourth-grade students who participated in the Habitat Explorers Field Trip program.

The generous donations from this year’s Newport Beach Summer Garden Party will allow Sherman to support more of these educational experiences for our local youth as they strive to Grow the Gardens for future generations.

Nearly 300 guests enjoyed our annual summer soiree and highlights included:
🏅A special proclamation awarded to Sherman Library & Gardens by Newport Beach councilmember Lauren Kleiman.
🎁An exclusive membership giveaway

We love to hear stories about the impact that Sherman Library & Gardens has had in the lives of others.

Meet Bill & Diane Hockinson whom shares their impact story here…

“For Diane and I, our most memorable memory at the gardens would be our wedding day, June 16th, 1979. The gardens were beautiful and the library was open for guests to review. The staff was helpful in every way. Returning annually, we have enjoyed the library and the paintings as well as the rare books. The displays in the adobe have been very educational, as we are locals. While we annually visit, we have found time to visit several times a year as we lived in Corona del Mar. The gardens at Christmas, Easter and fall offer us enjoyable visits. As we have lived in Corona del Mar for over 25 years, we visited the library and gardens countless times. We are members of the library and gardens and have brought our three children as guests. As our children are now married with children, we enjoy as grandparents coming to the library and gardens with our four grandchildren. In the future, we look forward to our membership and offering our time to assist in projects where we could help.”
