The UCI Urology Resident International Travel program began in 2018 with a goal to provide each participating medical resident with a one-week international travel mission trip without taking on any additional financial burden. During these trips, UCI Urology residents and staff work side by side with urologists in their home countries to treat patients and learn new surgical techniques. Recent trips have included Dakar, Senegal and Mozambique.
Through the generosity of friends, family and grateful patients, Dr. Heidi Stephany has committed to building an endowment to generate annual income so UCI Urology residents can travel cost-free, donating only their time, to do this life-altering international work.
Through your gift to the Margaret Eskola Endowed Resident International Travel Fund, UCI Urology residents will have the resources to expand their horizons and apply their knowledge to benefit patients in countries all over the world.

Our dedication to address unique urogynecological challenges faced by women and individuals requiring urological procedures is rooted in our groundbreaking research and efforts. At UCI Urology, our focus on Female Urology Research & Education enables us to explore cutting-edge techniques, surgical procedures, and medical interventions to improve patient outcomes and overall well-being, such as new techniques in reconstruction to improve quality of life.
In 2023, Dr. Olivia Chang started the Center for Pelvic Floor Disorders laboratory, where she works with 10+ trainees in a culture of mentorship, sponsorship in the pursuit for research excellence, and a dedication to the advancement of women’s health research. This research is focused on clinical outcomes and health services and includes surgical treatment outcomes after urologic and prolapse surgery, barriers to care, and incorporating patient preferences into deciding treatment.
Through collaboration with molecular biologist Dr. Mike Wu, our brilliant team (including medical students and undergrads, along with other esteemed urology research centers nationwide) is running multiple unique projects, such as the active investigation into spinal cord injury-related bladder failure and biomarkers to predict patient outcomes. A recent top priority is unraveling women’s urinary incontinence and understanding female urethra function failure in order to pioneer innovative treatments. This research recently won the First Award of the Society of Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine & Urogenital Reconstruction (SUFU).
Through your support to the Female Urology Research & Education, you become a part of a movement that fosters innovative solutions, advancing the effectiveness and efficiency of urological care.
