JAX SongStage Showcase is the place to experience excellent Singer Songwriters performing their original tunes. Here you'll find talent that is established, published, and recorded as well as rising stars ready to make a difference in the world.
Tonight, JAX SONGSTAGE with Kayla Kraemer is proud to feature touring singer songwriter Matt Axton along with 3 of Matt's favorite Los Angeles based singer songwriters: The Doohickeys (a duo), Gilbert Louie Ray & Kyle Wyman. Matt hails from an incredible lineage of singer songwriters, his father Hoyt Axton wrote "Never Been to Spain" and "Joy To the World" (Jeremiah was a Bullfrog), among many other hits of the era, while his Grandmother, Mae Boren Axton wrote "Heartbreak Hotel" and many more hits for Elvis and other stars of her era.
MATT AXTON: Grown in the mountains of California, Axtonâs eclectic style was proudly honed in the heart of the Axton Musical Legacy. Matt honors his family at every show with his own versions of their #1 hits âHeartbreak Hotel,â âJoy to the Worldâ and many more. Matt has recorded with music legends Steve Feroni (Tom Petty), Hal Cragin (Iggy Pop), Durga McBroom (Pink Floyd) and collaborated on projects such as âAbbey Road Reimaged - A Tribute to the Beatles.â Aaron Badgley of Spill Magazine said Mattâs version of âOctopusâs Garden,â âis pure genius and the best cover here. It is just a joy to listen to and really does stand out as an example of keeping the beauty of the song and artists putting their own spin on things.â
Boasting over 300 original songs and some of Los Angelesâ best players behind him, Matt Axton and his band Badmoon will hit the road running in 2024 with multiple West Coast and national tours including the recent âBadmoon Tourâ in April 2024. Catch the new single âBadmoonâon all streaming platforms and additional new releases and song collaborations in the coming months. Axton continues to carve his path in the independent Americana scene and proudly celebrates the family tradition of bringing just a little more âJoy to The World!â
THE DOOHICKEYS: The Doohickeys consists of singing and writing duo Haley Spence Brown & Jack Hackett. Haley grew up in Liberty, Missouri, helping train horses and spending time on her grandpaâs cattle farm. Jack grew up in a strict Japanese-American household in Atlanta, Georgia where you had to take your shoes off at the door (everything else was pretty lax).
Although they have country roots, the duo met at USC (FIGHT ON!) while working on the college TV stationâs satirical news show. On one fateful evening, Jack was hosting a legendary week-after-Halloween party when Haley heard the sounds of Kenny Chesney echoing through the spookily decorated halls. Right then, they discovered their mutual love of country music. The next day, instead of sitting down to write a sketch, they wrote the song I Wish My Truck Was Bigger.
The pair is now gearing up to release their first record All Hat No Cattle produced by two-time GrammyÂŽ nominee, Eric Corne. Their music video for âRein It In Cowboyâ won The American Songwriter music video contest, and their song âAll Hat, No Cattleâ was honorably mentioned in the May/June edition of the magazine. Their song âThis Town Sucksâ earned an award for Outstanding Songwriting in the 2023 Great American Song Contest. Their parody of Dolly Parton's "9 to 5," titled "9 to 6," has amassed over 3.5 million views on Instagram and TikTok.
DISCLAIMER: The Doohickeys are not dating. Theyâre just friends.
GILBERT LOUIE RAY: Hailing from the vibrant neighborhood of Atwater Village, California, Gilbert Louie Ray is an artist whose life has been profoundly shaped by the power of music. From the tender age of childhood, the melodies and harmonies of the Beatles, the soulful grooves of Motown, the rebellious spirit of punk, the storytelling of folk, and the heartfelt twang of bluegrass, all wove their magic into his soul. Yet, it's Americana music that emerged as the canvas for Gilbert's full creative expression.
KYLE WYMAN: Kyle Wyman is lead vocalist of Wyman and the Wolves who sounds like a more soulful version of the legendary 70s and 80s country warbler Gary Stewart and a feel of a tasty blend of Alt-Country, Rock, and Soul. Kyles has the ability to fuse together the multiple genres of Americana in songs that leave you humming their melodies long after hearing them.

JACOB WENDT is a musician, composer, music director, and educator in the Los Angeles area. A native of Northern Californiaâs Bay Area, Jacob started playing the piano at the age of six. His musical curiosity led him to study multiple instruments during his youth, including the guitar, bass, tuba, drum set, and percussion.
Although heavily influenced by Jazz and R&B drumming greats of the 1950âs and 60âs, his sound is unique; balanced, supportive, and interactive, with a driving energy that serves the music while leaving space for others to speak â he is an authoritative yet never intrusive player. His original ensembles have headlined major venues across Northern and Southern California (Blue Whale, Yoshiâs, Fillmore Jazz Festival, Catalinaâs, The Grape, Jazz Under Ground, The Harmony Room). To date he has released one album as a leader (Jacob Wendt Quartet, 2011) another as co-leader (Carter-White-Wendt, 2013) and a collection of original compositions (Jacob Wendt Sextet: Live at the Blue Whale, 2020).
His latest project, Silver Street, is a classic hardbop quintet in the spirit of Blue Note Records during the 1950âs & 60âs. The album features all original compositions influenced by jazz greats such as Horace Silver, Sonny Clark, Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter, and Hank Mobley. The album features Harry Ostrander (trumpet) Jimmy Emerzian (tenor) Doug Carter (piano) and David Reynoso (bass) - release date is set for Friday, October 18th, 2024.
