It’s truly a when you’re depositing a grant check first thing in the morning and you see this on the screen in the drive-thru teller lane. It reads:
📰 “POSITIVE NEWS—Study: olunteering promotes emotional well-being, healthier behaviors
Vancouver – Research from the University of British Columbia reveals that volunteering triggers positive emotions, decreased loneliness, and enhanced social connection, which contributes to healthier behaviors and reduced inflammation. The Associated Press reports that there are benefits, whether the volunteering includes physical activity or not. Although most research has focused on older adults, findings suggest high school students also benefit from volunteering.” —The Associated Press

👀 Look who’s representing Hampton Roads! 🤩
Sometimes we’re so busy volunteering that we don’t get photos of the action. And today was one of those days… but not surprising considering this group packed over 20,000 pounds of food in under three hours at the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank!
Afterward, we were fortunate to have the folks at Dollar Bank join us for a financial literacy lesson. From learning how to write and cash a check to the importance of budgeting and saving, our youth volunteers practiced some important skills and can better appreciate the challenges of juggling living expenses.

Our first day at Horse Boy Camp with Cole’s Horse Autism Therapy Station (C.H.A.T.S.) was fantastic! We dodged some stormy weather 🙌, explored all the sensory stations with our buddies and helped guide the horses on the trails. Our group also learned more about the benefits of Movement Method and the “follow the child” principle, which allows their buddies to lead conversations and playtime in a way that creates a productive, engaging and safe space.
During our reflection, we discussed the important role of organizations like —not just for children on the autism spectrum, but for parents and caregivers who want their children to experience the joys of summer camp with other kids. 🌞

Day 3 of ➡️ 20 youth volunteers at the Va Peninsula Foodbank ➡️ packed 360 boxes 🟰 13,300 lbs of food for our neighbors in need!
🤔Did you know that the YVC framework includes an icebreaker or team-builder to start every project, plus a service-learning lesson and a reflection activity to increase understanding of community needs, build empathy and inspire a lifetime ethic of service?
We believe that by engaging youth in the hard work 💪 and the heart work ❤️ of service learning, they will not only gain work and life skills but also leadership, compassion and valuable perspectives.
Day 1 of is in the books! Youth volunteers enhanced the sundial we installed last year with some hardscaping by adding a border and gravel to define the area. 🧱
🐐 🫏 They also added top rails to the fence that provides a new walkway between the goat and donkey enclosures, encouraging more animal interaction for guests.
🌱 And they helped remove invasive plants from around the community garden beds! Kudos to these awesome youth volunteers! Way to kick off YVCHR’s Summer of Service! ❤️💛🧡
