“Earlier this year, I participated in a month of classes for slightly older students, some of whom are attending college and others who are just trying to figure out their way into the Jazz scene. They all had to audition to be able to attend these classes as they were fairly exclusive: Only five or six musicians per ensemble and one teacher whose job it was to encourage them and motivate them to play more 'standards - based' jazz. Well, one saxophonist really stood out - Jacob Chung. He impressed me immediately with his mature sound, ideas, and frankly dazzling technique. Plus, he just happens to be a very nice guy, and most importantly, he has an eagerness to learn and a lightning-fast ability to absorb any new ideas that are thrown his way. So this year, I decided to start what will hopefully be an annual tradition of bringing in and showcasing one young, upcoming musician, and Jacob Chung is a man that I promise you’ll be hearing a lot more about in the future. Rather than just trotting him on as a young phenom, we’re going to integrate him into the whole of the weekend’s performances so everyone will get to hear him in different musical contexts. I think you’ll be very impressed - he already sounds fully formed - great sound, ideas, etc., so I’m proud to welcome him into our musical family!" - Ken Peplowski, Music Director, Oregon Coast Jazz Party
ARTIST ANNOUNCEMENT: Jacob Chung will play at the 2024 Oregon Coast Jazz Party! Jazz saxophonist/composer Jacob Chung’s dynamic, blues-rooted commitment to swing has charmed audiences in his hometown of Toronto and in New York City, where he is currently based. Jacob garnered several Canadian accolades including the 2021 Hnatyshyn Foundation Oscar Peterson Grant and the 2019 Prince Edward County Jazz Festival Rising Young Star Award. He is featured on Jacob Wutzke’s 2019 EP Stop & Go and Thomas Steele 10tet’s 2020 album 10tet. In the summer of 2023, Jacob performed twice at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington D.C., and at the Burlington Jazz Festival (VT) as a member of the prestigious Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program. Jacob was also awarded “Outstanding Soloist” in Downbeat Magazine’s 2024 Student Music edition. The Jacob Chung Quintet’s 2022 debut album Epistle received critical acclaim for its embodiment of the spirit of jazz; “A bunch of swingers that know the history without the baggage, they zip the ears open with a delightful sound that uplifts while it makes you smile” (Chris Spector, Midwest Record).
