The effects of meditation on the body have been studied extensively and findings show that meditation can affect both the brain's structure and functions.

Structurally, those who meditate tend to have increased cortical thickness (gray matter concentration) of the hippocampus - the part of the brain responsible for regulating emotions and memory, as well as certain areas of the brain that play roles in emotion regulation, self-awareness, compassion, and introspection.

They also tend to have decreased volume in the amygdala- the part of the brain responsible for emotions such as stress, fear, and anxiety.

Some expert meditators have been known to develop a thicker cerebral cortex-the outer layer of the brain responsible for more sophisticated thought processes such as introspection and abstract thinking.

Additionally meditators are are better able to regulate the connection between the amygdala and prefrontal cortex. The prefrontal cortex is responsible for regulating the responses to stress that start in the amygdala. Meditators will still experience stress but are better at maintaining calm and responding effectively.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, is a mental health condition that develops after an experiencing a traumatic event.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs reports that about 6% of the U.S population will have PTSD at some point in their lives; affecting about 13 million U.S adults during a given year.

PTSD can be a debilitating condition that can result in an individual being unable to work, participate in activities they used to enjoy, or be in certain environments.

Did you know that there are a variety of different meditation techniques that you can choose from? These include:
🧘 Guided Meditation - Also referred to as guided imagery or visualization this method of meditation involves forming mental images of relaxing places or situations. You are often led through this process by a teacher or guide. There are many guided meditations available through apps and online videos.

🧘 Mantra Meditation - This type of meditation involves silently repeating a calming word or phrase as a way to prevent wandering thoughts.

🧘 Mindfulness Meditation - This type of meditation focuses on increasing your awareness and acceptance of living in the present moment. By focusing on your experience during meditation, such as the flow of your breath, you can broaden your conscious awareness, observing your thoughts and emotions as they come up but allowing them to pass without judgement.

🧘 Active Meditation - Active meditation is the process of meditation while also doing an activity such as Qi Gong, Tai Chi, Yoga, or even running. Any activity that allows you to focus on the present moment and tune in to your body and thoughts.

🧘 Transcendental Meditation - This meditation technique is taught to you by a certified Transcendental Meditation Teacher. It involved silently repeating a personalized mantra given to you by your teacher in a specific way for 20 minutes twice daily. This technique is known for promoting profound levels of relaxation and inner peace.

Choosing the right meditation technique for you will help you to develop a successful meditation practice. You may want to try different ones and see which one you enjoy most or you may find that using different techniques in different situations is what works best.

According to the Anxiety & Depression Association of America individuals with anxiety disorders are two to three times more likely to have an alcohol or other substance abuse disorder at some point in their lives than the general population.

About 20% of Americans with an anxiety or mood disorder (such as depression) have a substance use disorder, and about 20% of individuals with a substance use disorder also have an anxiety or mood disorder.
