Here are a few tips to make sure you are staying safe during your walks: ✅ Walk on the sidewalk whenever possible. ✅ If you aren’t able to walk on the sidewalk always walk facing traffic, if you are walking with others make sure to walk single file. ✅ If you are using headphones make sure the volume stays low so that you can be aware of your surroundings. There are some headphones that are even made without covering your ears so that you can still hear what is going on around you. ✅ Avoid walking at night when you can. If you have to walk in the dark try to go with a friend and be sure to wear bright clothing and a safety vest. It is also a good idea to carry a flashlight. ✅ Know your limits. If you have a preexisting health condition or if you are not used to walking start slow. Be aware of the weather especially in very hot or cold weather. ✅ Keep your eyes up. Walking while looking at your phone can be dangerous. Keep your eyes up and stay aware of your surroundings. It may be beneficial to make a point of staying off your phone while you walk. ✅ Cross safely. Use crosswalks and never walk in front of traffic assuming they will see you and stop. ✅ Always carry identification as well as any important medical information.
