Statement from College Republicans on the Recent Climate Strike Protest at OU:
Climate change is real, and yes, humans are a contributing factor. While there is no consensus on the severity of the threat, it is one that must be addressed. College Republicans believes that sustainable solutions exist to address climate change and we remain committed to achieving them in a deliberative way. Unfortunately, the recent climate protest on OU’s campus shows the commitment by some, particularly on the left, to do the opposite and merely disrupt and discourage. To be clear, we applaud the energy and enthusiasm of the protesters. However, the solutions posed by these leftists are inherently nonsensical, unrealistic, and problematic. One proposal wants OU to eliminate the opportunity for students to gain meaningful employment in certain industries. Another supports the idea that renaming buildings will somehow solve problems.
Perhaps most revealing is the support of costly ideas that will inevitably lead to significant increases in tuition and fees, which will naturally make it difficult for lower income people to attend college and gain employment.
The protesters have expressed the goal of intentionally harming the university’s financial status by encouraging donors to withdraw their support, making it contingent on their demands. That’s right, these protesters’ demands would force the university to charge students more as well as damage critical financial support that OU depends on in it's mission of providing the best possible educational experience for students. Now, in the spirit of compromise and goodwill, College Republicans would like to state our support for calls of sustainability of OU’s landscaping, including calls for xeriscaping, limiting water usage, and focusing on sustainable growth; and we also support bettering recycling abilities and awareness on campus. However, as typical of the left, most of the solutions proposed by this group are ineffective, harmful, and unreasonable. In particular, we believe calls for “dismantling the system” are silly and disturbingly detrimental. Rather than returning to pre-agricultural revolution days and embracing Marxism as some of the more radical left proposes, we at College Republicans believe that free enterprise and human innovation represent the greatest vehicles for improving the environment and combatting climate change. We will continue to support realistic, reasonable solutions such as carbon-capture technologies, nuclear energy, and policies like carbon dividends as some of the best forms of creating a cleaner, healthier earth. We call on others to do the same. This is some of the technology and innovation that the very students today’s protesters want to degrade and diminish would be working on. We support their capabilities and possibilities, and we remain optimistic about mankind’s ability to innovate and revolutionize science. We call on others to do the same.
A special thanks to Dr. Rick Farmer and the Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs for providing us with pizza and talking to us about leadership opportunities available to our members! Also shoutout to all the members who came out tonight!
