Taking up space can be beneficial for your mental health:

1. Boosts Self-Confidence: When you allow yourself to take up space, you're affirming your right to exist and be noticed. This can enhance your self-esteem and self-worth.
2. Promotes Authenticity: Taking up space encourages you to be your true self without hiding or shrinking to fit in.
3. Reduces Stress and Anxiety: Feeling that you don't deserve to take up space can lead to stress and anxiety. Embracing your right to occupy space can reduce these negative feelings.
4. Enhances Social Interactions: When you confidently take up space, others are more likely to notice and respect you. This can lead to more positive and meaningful social interactions.
5. Empowers Self-Expression: Taking up space allows you to express your thoughts, opinions, and feelings more freely, leading to better communication and personal relationships.
6. Encourages Boundary Setting: It helps you set and maintain healthy boundaries, ensuring your needs and limits are respected by others.
7. Improves Physical Presence: Adopting open and expansive postures (literally taking up space) can positively affect your mood and make you feel more powerful and in control.

How does taking up space improve your well-being?

Designated Worry Time (DWT) is a cognitive-behavioral strategy used to manage and reduce anxiety by setting aside a specific time each day to focus on worries. Here are the five steps typically involved:

413 Theraworks talks Somatic Therapy 06/25/2024

We had a chance to sit down and chat with 413 Theraworks psychotherapist, Emily Siegel, LICSW about somatic therapy.

Somatic therapy is a therapeutic approach that focuses on the connection between the body and the mind. It aims to help individuals process and heal from psychological and emotional issues through bodily awareness and physical interventions. The underlying premise is that the body holds onto past traumas and stress, which can manifest as physical symptoms, tension, or chronic pain. By addressing these somatic experiences, therapists help clients release and resolve these stored traumas.

413 Theraworks talks Somatic Therapy Candace Morey Wall, LMHC and Emily Siegel, LICSW discuss an introduction to Somatic Therapy.

One of the biggest challenges we hear in the therapy room is how connected to the phone clients are. Here are some low barrier to entry ways to begin decreasing use:

1. Go to settings and turn your display to Grayscale. Your brain won’t be as excited to keep looking at things that are just black and white.

2. Put your phone out of reach. When you’re beginning to disconnect, the urge to just grab your phone will still be there, but if it’s in the other room, you’ll have to get up to get it. This will begin to break the habit of reaching for it whenever you have a second of downtime.

3. Turn off any push notifications you don’t need. All your apps, email, etc. We’re conditioned (just like Pavlov and his dogs) to respond to those dings. Let’s begin to break the reinforcement patterns.

This month we say thank you and best of luck to first intern, Alex! Throughout her 9 months with us, Alex created and co-led a grief group for parents who have lost a child and provided reduced fee/pro-bono therapy to 18 clients. This equates to $24,000 of therapy donated to our community. We are so honored Alex chose us as her internship site and her incredible impact on our community in such a short period of time. 👏

Our brains are wired to keep us safe. So when something is outside our comfort zone or is new and feels risky or scary, our brains will alert us 🚨. But just because something is scary, or doesn’t mean it is dangerous.

Have you let your brain talk you out of new things before because they’ve felt scary or anxiety provoking (even if you knew they aren’t dangerous?) Like, maybe therapy? 😉

Our brain is so good at convincing us that everything that pops into our head is true—especially thoughts that may be jarring in some ways. But this is not the case. The average brain can think about 60,000 thoughts a day. Just random bits of information being processed like a computer.

If you ever find yourself stuck on a thought, ask yourself what the facts are to back it up?

We often overextend ourselves at work because we’re people-pleasers, see our boss doing it, want to be noticed as going above and beyond. But at what cost?

02/05/2024

Our brains are constantly using perception, learning and memory, the fear response, decision-making, and reflexes to respond to the environment around us. These are responses meant to keep us safe, not meant to keep us happy.

Intentional focus on internal factors (not pursuing material wealth or chasing external sources of happiness,) like cultivating positive relationships, practicing gratitutde, and engaging in meaningful activities can contribute to sustained happiness and well-being over time.
