Camellia sasanqua ‘Yuletide’
This beautiful camellia starts blooming in the fall and keep on blooming right through wintertime, which is how they earned the name Yuletide. In fact, they are regarded as the longest blooming camellia of them all 🌸
They are very fragrant, and are a welcome food source to our over wintering hummingbirds 🐦
They do best in shady spots, and can be grown as a shrub, or pruned into a small tree 🌳

Gaultheria procumbens, better known as ‘Wintergreen’ 🪴
The berries of this plant are very aromatic and flavorful, and are commonly used to flavor things like gum, mints and anything else with ‘Wintergreen’ in the name 😉
However, it’s not just the minty taste of the berries that this plant has to offer, both the berries and leafs can be used medicinally! They can be brewed as a tea to alleviate rheumatic symptoms, like headache, fever, sore throat, and various aches and pains. The reason for this is that the plant contains many of the same natural properties as aspirin 💊
On top of all that it makes a great addition to winter containers, as it’s evergreen and the beautiful red berries will stick around long into the winter ☃️
Whether you want to grow it for its medicinal purposes or just for its ornamental value, it is a great plant to grow!

Our living Christmas trees just came in and aren’t they beautiful🎄
Living Christmas trees can be brought indoors for the holidays, and then back outside after and treated as a potted plant for the rest of the year. You can reuse your tree for years at a time until it gets to big for your space, then it can be planted in your yard, or even donated to the forestry service, provided your tree is a native variety

It’s that time of year where we all start thinking about putting our gardens to bed for the season, and for many perennials that means getting cut back to the ground, but did you know there are actually lots of perennials that the birds will thank you for leaving up through the winter? ❄️
It’s true! The seed-heads of many perennials attract songbirds that stick around for the winter like finches, sparrows, chickadees, juncos, and jays, providing lots of food for them as well as other foraging wildlife 🐦 🐿
The rudbeckia (pictured here) is one of their favorites, but they also love echinacea, agastache, asters, bee balm, joe-pye w**d, sunflowers, hibiscus, daisies, liatris, penstemon, anemones, and many others! 🌻

‘Miner’s Merlot’ Euphorbia makes a great pot stuffer, or accent piece in a flower bed 🌷🌻🥀
It’s a heat and drought tolerant once established, highly deer/elk and bunny resistant, and is generally a very a fuss-free perennial 🌱
It’s evergreen, which makes it a great choice for fall and winter color in containers, but it is also a great addition to in-ground plantings for year round interest🌱☀️🍂❄️
The flowers are also just as unique and interesting as the foliage on this one, and they last for several months 😉
One of my favorite things about this plant is how beautiful it looks after a rain, as you can see here🌧️

10/20/2023

Amaryllis bulbs are now in stock!

Picture one is a variety called ‘Double Arctic Nymph’ picture two is ‘Double Dragon’ and picture three is ‘Rosy Star’

Amaryllis cam be grown indoors over winter as a house plant, and their spectacular blooms usually start to pop right around the holidays 🎄

Amaryllis are very easy to grow, needing only a few basic things 🌱 They should to be placed in a brightly lit spot, and weather you decide to grow them in a vase of water with rocks at the bottom, or you start them in soil, you generally only need to check on their water situation about once a week 💦

10/17/2023

Snappy’s wishing you all a happy for the last time this year🐢
No need to worry though, Snappy is perfectly fine! She is currently going into brumation, which is a lot like hibernation. During the colder months of the year, freshwater turtles like Snappy dive down to the muddy bottom of ponds where the temperature never gets below 1°C. They nestle down in the mud, and their metabolism slows way down. This allows them to survive for months without food and with very little oxygen, and when spring comes again, they wake up and come back to the surface to resume life as usual ☺️🐢

Hypericum ‘Magical Midnight Glow’ is a fabulous perennial for fall interest 🍂
The yellow flowers start to bloom in summer, followed by the bright red berries that will hang around all fall and into the winter ❄️
It’s a beautiful plant any time, but after a rain when it’s covered in dew drops it’s an absolute show stopper 🤩
They are hardy down to zone 6, are beloved by bees, do best in full sun, and can get between 2 and 3 feet tall 🌱

10/13/2023

Calicarpa bodinieri ‘Profusion’ better known as Beautyberry 💜

This unique shrub gets covered in small clusters of light purple flowers in summer, which are loved by bees and butterflies, followed closely by these bright purple berries in fall, which are a great food source for birds though the winter 🐝🦋🐦

A question we often get asked is “Are the berries edible?” The answer is yes, though you may not want to eat them in large quantities when they are raw, as they can cause diarrhea, but when they are cooked or made into jams/jellies, they are quite good!

We’ve mostly just been talking about the berries and how cool they are, but the leaves are actually pretty amazing too! If you break up the leaves and rub them on your skin, the oils in them work as natural mosquito repellent! 🍃
That being said, it’s always a good idea with things like this to test them out on a small patch of skin before going all in, just to make sure you don’t have an allergic reaction.

In autumn, the leaves change to dark shades of red purple and orange before falling off, leaving just the bright purple berries along the stems throughout the winter ❄️

This shrub does best in full sun, but can tolerate part shade, and grows about 6 ft tall and wide in a span of ten years, though ultimately, it can get much larger without pruning.

It’s definitely one amazing shrub 😉

If you’re in the market to pick out some new trees for your landscape, this is definitely a great time to shop for/plant them 🌳

Saffron in one of the most coveted spices in the world, not to mention the most expensive spice in the world, so why not grow it yourself?
Saffron crocus are perennial, and will spread and naturalize over time. They do best in full sun but can tolerate part shade as well. They bloom in the fall and the stamens should be harvested shortly after each flower opens.
We have saffron bulbs in stock now, so don’t miss out!
