Do you ever go into a day wondering what will happen, and then you meet someone or talk with someone and BAM! your head explodes with excitement? Just had a first-time Zoom call with a new friend of mine and left that conversation with a head full of ideas and some new clarity about ideas that have been banging around in my noggin' for some time. It is just a reminder to me, and hopefully all of us, to explore new connections, keep an open mind and start a conversation. No text, no email, but a face-to-face or video meeting with someone new. Q. How do you stop an unstoppable force?
A. You don’t.
To say that AI is shaking up the world of work would be an understatement. I foresee a future where AI will take over most routine jobs that involve repetitive tasks or processing large amounts of data. This includes blue-collar jobs such as factory work and call center customer service as well as white-collar jobs like accounting, law and even medicine in some ways.
But taking this into consideration, I also believe that AI will not completely terminate jobs as feared by many; rather, it will transform them. To be able to work in an AI-integrated world, employees of the future will need to learn how to interact with advanced machines and algorithms, interpret data and use it for decision-making, and manage cybersecurity risks.
New jobs will also be created—those that demand advanced technological skills, creativity, critical thinking and human emotions, which AI isn't able to replicate. Roles such as AI ethicists, data scientists, AI trainers and cybersecurity experts will see an increase in demand. And in the world of services and sales: personal shoppers, home health workers, and concierge-style services will thrive, as AI is unlikely to replace the human element of these roles.
Education and training systems will need to be revamped to prepare for this tectonic shift in the job market. We will have to teach our children how to learn and adapt in an ever-changing technological landscape, how to handle complex problem-solving tasks, and other skills that AI can't outperform.
Whether the transition to this AI-driven future will be smooth or disruptive is hard to predict. But what's certainly inevitable is that AI is altering the very nature of work as we know it, and it’s our duty to adapt and evolve alongside it. But this I know—just like every other major technological shift that has occurred in history, we will adjust, we will persevere and we will overcome the forthcoming challenges.
