On April 19th, music education students worked with a guest presenter, Mr. Jimmy Verdone, the band and general music teacher at Marlborough High School in Massachusetts. Mr. Verdone challenged UMassD students to rethink what middle and high school general music could look like by introducing them to his engaging (and highly popular) “Learn to Jam” elective music class, which is open to all levels of students. Mr. Verdone spent the first hour presenting the philosophical background behind his approach, including (but not limited to) learning music primarily by ear, playing and demonstrating skills and knowledge instead of talking about it so that students in all levels of English fluency can equally participate and succeed, and focusing on building community and connections through music. In the second hour, Mr. Verdone led students through a typical jamming project from his class. It was an inspiring event where students could let loose and have fun while exploring innovative educational ideas and gaining concrete teaching strategies to bring to their classrooms. Check out this rocking video of “Don’t Stop Believing.”
