MUS 155 University Choir
M-W-F (not all Fridays) 12:00 – 12:50

This ensemble is the large vocal ensemble for UMass Dartmouth. The choir performs a variety of college-level vocal literature from classical to jazz to musical theater. This semester the messages of the music include care of the earth, children’s rights, governmental responsibility, and positive change in our society. The works include the Missa Gaia (Earth Mass), Prayer of the Children, The Last Words of David, and Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In. All our welcome and practice recordings and music reading skills will be taught for those less experienced singers.

The Social Justice Choir was founded in January of 2022 for the purpose of using music to help make a difference in the world. This intergenerational choir is led by faculty from both UMass Dartmouth and Bridgewater State University and aims to perform music that shares a message of justice and includes repertoire by composers from underrepresented populations. In addition to singing about change, each semester the choir also completes a community service project that helps better the world in a tangible way.

Our Fall 2024 focus is Civic Engagement, and we will be encouraging people to get involved at all levels of government. Our goal is to encourage people of different and even opposing views to recognize the importance of being both active and respectful during this politically charged time, and to use music to bring us all together to build a better world. Previous Social Justice Choir projects have included environmental justice, marine life, homeless children, and hunger.

Groundwork is thrilled to welcome UMassD graduates for an exhibition that celebrates the art of illustration. Since losing the Star Store, faculty and students of UMassD’s College of Visual Performing Arts have been eager to reconnect with the New Bedford art community, and this exhibition is the seed of new beginnings.

Anna Foro (Art and Design: Painting ’25) and Connor Chan (Art and Design: Drawing ’24) have been selected for inclusion in the RITES OF PASSAGE 20th Annual Emerging Artists Exhibition and Awards for Current and Recent Undergraduates at Manifest Gallery, Cincinnati, OH. Exhibition dates: May 31 – June 28, with opening reception on May 31, 6-9pm.

This highly competitive national juried exhibition received 220 entries from 67 artists from which the jurors selected 14 works by 12 artists from 9 different universities/colleges across the U.S. to be displayed in the exhibition. The represented institutions are: Indiana University, Kansas City Art Institute, Mississippi State University, Saginaw Valley State University, Shepherd University, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, University of Memphis, University of North Carolina at Asheville, and Wayne State College. The Best of Show award and the Director’s Choice Award will be selected and announced during the exhibition.

In addition to the actual gallery exhibition all exhibited works will be included in the Manifest Exhibition Annual (MEA) publication of the entire exhibition season www.manifestgallery.org/mea. MEA has received national recognitions and awards from the Independent Publishers Association and the Graphic Design USA.

The Emerging Young Artists And Designers 2024 Award Winners Exhibition is on view in the CVPA Campus Gallery - Upper Gallery (back part of the gallery) through this Wednesday, April 3rd. Come and see this wonderful showcase of the talent of New England’s high school art students! The EYAD 2024 received submissions from over 800 young artists, from which the juror, CVPA’s Associate Dean Ann Kim, selected 200 works for the online exhibition – www.umassd.edu/cvpa/explore/emerging-young-artists. EYAD 2024’s Award Winners and Honorable Mention Recipients are presented in this marvelous physical exhibition at the CVPA Campus Gallery - Upper Gallery.
