A Medicare Medical Savings Account (MSA) Plan combines a high deductible Medicare Advantage Plan and a bank account. The plan deposits money from Medicare into the account. You can use the money in this account to pay for your health care costs, but only Medicare-covered expenses count toward your deductible. The amount deposited is usually less than your deductible amount so you generally will have to pay out-of-pocket before your coverage begins.
A Medicare-certified provider is a health care provider (like a home health agency, hospital, nursing home, or dialysis facility) that's been approved by Medicare. Providers are approved or "certified" by Medicare if they've passed an inspection conducted by a state government agency. Medicare only covers care given by providers who are certified.
The “Medicare Hospital Insurance Tax” is a tax under the Federal Insurance Contributions Act (F**A) that is a United States payroll tax imposed by the federal government on both employees and employers to fund Medicare.
A Non-preferred provider is a provider who doesn’t have a contract with your health insurer or plan to provide services to you. You’ll pay more to see a non-preferred provider. Check your policy to see if you can go to all providers who have contracted with your health insurance or plan, or if your health insurance or plan has a “tiered” network and you must pay extra to see some providers.
An Out-of-pocket maximum/limit is the most you have to pay for covered services in a plan year. After you spend this amount on deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance for in-network care and services, your health plan pays 100% of the costs of covered benefits.
Getting “Prior Authorization” means getting approval from a health plan that may be required before you get a service or fill a prescription in order for the service or prescription to be covered by your plan.
Medigap or Medicare Advantage? This type of plan pays secondary to Original Medicare.
Medigap! Medigap plans pay after Original Medicare, as it helps cover the "gaps" that Medicare typically leaves you, such as deductibles, copays, and coinsurance.
Medicare Part A Fast Fact: If you’ve worked 10 plus years (40 quarters) in the U.S., you have already paid for Part A via payroll taxes. If you have not paid payroll taxes in the U.S. for 10 plus years, you will pay the Part A premium.
TRUE or FALSE?
Once you take Medicare you must also take Social Security.
False! You can delay Social Security beyond 65 to maximize your benefit. If you do this, there are other ways to pay for your Medicare premiums until you take Social Security.
Medicare Quick Tip: If you’re looking to take a trip to the dermatologist, it’s good to check if your Medicare plan will cover the reason for your visit. Medicare typically covers dermatology services, but there are some services that Medicare will decline.
TRUE or FALSE?
A Medigap plan must cover what Original Medicare covers.
True! Though, the amount of coverage varies from plan to plan, the perk of Medigap plans is that they agree to help pay for the gap in the services that Medicare covers but not in full.
Can I Get Help with Paying for Medicare? Yes, you absolutely can. There are many different financial assistance programs for people who need it. Some of the most popular options include Medicare Savings Programs and Medicaid.
Moving on to Medicare after a lifetime of insurance through your employer can be a scary thing. Many of our clients ask if Medicare is good or bad. Contact us today for a consultation.
Your Initial Medicare Enrollment Period (or IEP) is a seven-month period of time. It begins three months before the month of your 65th birthday. It then includes the month of your birthday and extends for three months after your birthday month.
Fast Fact: What is Medigap Attained-Age Rating?
Attained-Age Rating is a rating class in which a Medigap insurance company determined the rate based on your current age (the age you’ve “attained”). Your premiums tends to go up as you get older.
Medicare isn’t mandatory, but delaying enrollment may come with penalty fees. Therefore, it is wise to explore all your options before postponing coverage.
