Congratulations to the North Myrtle Beach Chiefs for making it to the SC baseball State Championships tonight! You should all be so proud of your accomplishment! We are proud to be a Chief!

Wednesday morning, staff from North Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue, North Myrtle Beach Recreation and North Myrtle Beach Aquatic and Fitness Center recognized the individuals pictured below and presented them with a Citizen Heroism Award.

On the morning of December 14th, 2022 NMB Fire Engineer Andy Hamer was working out at the Aquatic Center off duty when he suffered a medical emergency during his workout. Staff members and other AFC Members who were close by recognized something wasn’t right and rushed to assist. Hamer went into cardiac arrest and CPR was immediately started. A nearby AED was also utilized to deliver a shock.

When our Fire crews from Station 1 across the street arrived, Hamer was semi responsive to them and breathing on his own.

He was transported to Grand Strand ER where he received further cardiac care and was discharged from the hospital the following afternoon with no further complications. A few days later he returned back to work in a limited capacity and is currently assisting our Fire Marshal’s office until he is cleared to return to full duty.

The immediate actions of these individuals below played a major role in having a happy conclusion to this story.

We thank each of them for their actions on that day.

Just another great example of how being educated in CPR can make a difference.
