Holy Gospel according to Saint Matthew 19:3-12
Some Pharisees approached Jesus, and tested him, saying,
"Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause whatever?"
He said in reply, "Have you not read that from the beginning
the Creator made them male and female and said,
For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother
and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh?
So they are no longer two, but one flesh.
Therefore, what God has joined together, man must not separate."
They said to him, "Then why did Moses command
that the man give the woman a bill of divorce and dismiss her?"
He said to them, "Because of the hardness of your hearts
Moses allowed you to divorce your wives,
but from the beginning it was not so.
I say to you, whoever divorces his wife
(unless the marriage is unlawful)
and marries another commits adultery."
His disciples said to him,
"If that is the case of a man with his wife,
it is better not to marry."
He answered, "Not all can accept this word,
but only those to whom that is granted.
Some are incapable of marriage because they were born so;
some, because they were made so by others;
some, because they have renounced marriage
for the sake of the Kingdom of heaven.
Whoever can accept this ought to accept it."

From Father Varghese’s Desk
Bishop Henning has been appointed by the Holy Father as the new Archbishop of Boston, succeeding Cardinal Sean O’Malley. Please pray for his new mission and whomever the Lord sends to be our next bishop. Archbishop-designate Henning will be formally installed at Holy Cross Cathedral in Boston on October 31st. This of course is great news for the Church in Boston and the United States, but sad for us in the Diocese of Providence.
His brief stay in Rhode Island has been observed with a lot of enthusiasm as he slowly made his way through the diocese. His pastoral approach and kind demeanor certainly has gone a long way in providing hope for the church in Rhode Island in these most challenging times. Let us pray to the Holy Spirit for his successor, that our new bishop will continue the good work Bishop Henning has begun.
We are very appreciative of the efforts he made to reach out to parishes, schools, and agencies of ministry. His efforts were recognizable and appreciative. Thus, the reason we admit that though we are happy for him, we are disappointed in each other and concerned about what this change will affect its future. We must channel our surprise and disappointments into prayer and trust in God’s will. Knowing Bishop Henning, I am sure that in his love for our diocese, he too will be praying with all of us asking the Holy Spirit to inspire our Holy Father, Pope Francis, to send a new Bishop who will help to put the Diocese back on track and build for its future. Let us pray through the intercession of our Patroness, Our Lady of Providence, to intercede on our behalf.

PRAYER FOR COMPLAINERS:
Lord, help me always to remember that I am an imperfect person living in an imperfect world, and that perfection is to be found only in You! When I am tempted to see the splinter in my neighbor’s eye, let me not forget the plank that is in my own. Make me ever aware that we all fall short of Your glory and are as nothing compared to You. When I am tempted to grumble or complain, make me deeply aware of the manifold blessings that surround my life. Continue to teach me that criticism and negativity only tear down, while compassion, understanding and appreciation always build up. Nurture in me a positive and hopeful attitude! May I ever live with that firm conviction that if I have You, I have all that one could possibly want in this world. Indeed, You are my shepherd, there is nothing more that I should want. Amen!

Holy Gospel according to Saint Luke 1:39-56
Mary set out
and traveled to the hill country in haste
to a town of Judah,
where she entered the house of Zechariah
and greeted Elizabeth.
When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting,
the infant leaped in her womb,
and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit,
cried out in a loud voice and said,
“Blessed are you among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
And how does this happen to me,
that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears,
the infant in my womb leaped for joy.
Blessed are you who believed
that what was spoken to you by the Lord
would be fulfilled.”
And Mary said:
“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me
and holy is his Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,
and has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children forever.”
Mary remained with her about three months
and then returned to her home.

Mary, Mother of Mankind Parish 1967-2018
The 50th Anniversary of our Parish in 2017 was concelebrated with a Mass with Bishop Tobin, as he was the main celebrant. The following is a brief history of our Parish.
Mary, Mother of Mankind Church had its origins as a Chapel erected in 1954 as a result of efforts of the Marian Sodality, who brought with them, from their native Caserta, Italy, a deep love for our Blessed Mother. She was the Patroness of their village and they wished to honor her with a shrine. Beginning
in 1956, every Sunday approximately 80 members of the Society would gather to pray the rosary.
In August of 1960, the Chapel Committee, transferred the deeds of the Chapel and land, donated to the Society by Mr. & Mrs. Vito DiGuilio in memory of their parents Bernard and Carmella DiGuilio, to the Diocese of Providence.
The following month, Msgr. Galliano J. Cavallaro, Pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Providence, who was Chaplain to the Society, celebrated the first mass. Thereafter, Mass was celebrated several times a year at the Chapel.
In response to a petition of over 100 families, the Most Rev. Russell J. McVinney, Bishop of Providence elevated the Chapel to the status of a Mission of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish.
Msgr. Cavallaro arranged 2 Masses to be offered each Sunday at 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.
Effective on September 6, 1967 Bishop McVinney raised the Mission status of the Chapel to a full Parish Church under the Patronage and protection of Mary under the title Mary, Mother of Mankind. The Rev. William E. Palmer was appointed the first pastor.
In November of 1972 Rev. Clyde J. Walsh was appointed pastor and under his tenure, work on construction of a new church building in May 1979 began, with completion in May 1980. A rectory was attached to the church and finished in 1981.
In October 2010, under the wonderful and gracious guidance of Fr. Grant, St. Lawrence Parish was merged with Mary, Mother of Mankind Parish. In addition to a very warm welcome for its parishioners, a statue from St. Lawrence found a new home in the garden of our parish.
