As the mental health crisis continues in our community and throughout the nation, we understand the need to reach everyone with education about how to help one another. That's why the MetroHealth Institute for H.O.P.E. Opportunity Center at VĂa Sana hosted a Mental Health First Aid Training Course in Spanish for members of the Hispanic community.
The course, coordinated by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI Greater Cleveland), aimed to teach the more than 30 participants how to recognize when someone may be experiencing a mental health crisis and what to do to help.
Like CPR, the Mental Health First Aid Training is designed for everyone regardless of education level or professional experience. Participants are taught to be good listeners and the importance of avoiding stigmatizing words, which could deter those in need from seeking help.
MetroHealth Patient Navigator Yosmar Sanchez provides health and social service information and support to members of Clevelandâs Spanish-speaking community. He said the Mental Health First Aid Training provided valuable skills for his work.
âI love this job and helping people,â Yosmar said. âI believe the community needs to talk more about mental health.â
