Talking about s*x is never easy. Talking about s*xual abuse is even harder, especially when you care about the people involved. But your gut feeling is a reaction to something real that you have seen or heard.

Many people have shared with us that in hindsight they wished that they had followed up on an intuition or pursued a concern they had.

Not all adults understand how to maintain safe and appropriate boundaries with youth.

Questioning a close adult’s behaviors is not easy, but is a vital step to preventing abuse.

When you see something that makes you have that “gut feeling,” it’s so important that you dig a little deeper and not ignore what you’re noticing.

In response to Now!'s and presentation on at the 31st The American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children Colloquium, Executive Director of The World Childhood Foundation USA, Mary L. Pulido, PhD, wrote this piece recognizing the need for more exceptional youth resources like WhatsOK.

"The onus should not just be on the children to defend themselves. We need to identify the young teens who are perpetrating abuse and offer them support and services so that these behaviors are extinguished, and they do not grow into adult perpetrators."

With guest expert Molly Froelich, this webinar from 2019 shares stories and concerns from Helpline callers who are worried that someone they love is s*xually abusing a child.

We take a deeper dive into warning signs in adult’s behaviors, building the audience’s confidence so they can identify when an adult’s behaviors are crossing boundaries and are not safe. We also discuss resources and services to support adults with problematic and abusive s*xual behaviors, and focus on building skills to have a conversation with an adult whose behaviors are a warning sign or even abusive.

I want to keep my child safe from abuse − but research tells me I’m doing it wrong 05/28/2024

We love this article from our partner Melissa Bright, PhD, at the Center for Violence Prevention Research about the wrong assumptions she overcame and the new techniques she learned as a parent and researcher preventing child s*xual abuse.

"...after nearly a quarter-century of conducting research – 15 years on family violence, another eight on child abuse prevention, including s*xual abuse – I realized that many people, including me, were using antiquated strategies to protect our children."

Read her full article to see what she's learned and how she implements it.

I want to keep my child safe from abuse − but research tells me I’m doing it wrong It’s rarely the creep at the playground. About 90% of child s*xual abusers know the family.

Experience has taught us that actions by adults can be more effective than expecting kids to protect themselves from s*xual abuse. Still, we know that children also need accurate, age-appropriate information about child s*xual abuse and confidence that adults they know will support them.

This makes clear communication a cornerstone of effective prevention.

We're so glad to receive questions like this so that we can help address this s*xual boundary-crossing behavior in a way that has both youths’ well-being and safety in mind.

In this column, we give advice whether you’re a camp affiliate, the parent of the child who engaged in the inappropriate behavior, or the parent of the youth who was on the receiving end of this concerning behavior. No matter what your role is, it is critical that we address this youth’s unsafe behavior, and get him support and help.

Our Story

Stop It Now! was founded by Fran Henry, a survivor of childhood s*xual abuse who learned first hand that standard approaches to keeping children safe from child s*xual abuse at that time did not respond to the complex relationships surrounding most abuse.

Her vision? To have the s*xual abuse of children recognized as a preventable public health problem, to make helping adults take responsibility to prevent and stop s*xual abuse of children a main focus of prevention, and to create effective programs based on these principles.

This vision has been realized through the work of Stop It Now! and its 26 years of innovative programming has shown that:

  • Adults will act to prevent abuse, if they have access to accurate information, practical tools, guidance and support
