Iron Horse Music Hall begins renovations on legendary Northampton venue The Parlor Room nonprofit said it's launching a campaign for $750,000 worth of updates at the Iron Horse, hoping to start hosting shows there again in May 2024.
Today, we kick off our capital campaign, inviting you to join the revival of The Iron Horse —a beloved venue in downtown Northampton steeped in music history. Last week, we gathered to witness the inaugural song since the Parlor Room Collective acquired the business. The voices of Board Member and Darlingside’s Harris Paseltiner, Executive Director and Parsonsfield’s Chris Freeman, and Board Member and songstress Kimaya Diggs, marked a significant new chapter for this local gem.

Born and raised in Detroit’s inner-city, BLKBOK (born Charles Wilson III), grew up in a music-filled house and by the time he was 8, BLKBOK was an acclaimed piano prodigy, winning statewide accolades and college-level competitions. When it came to music, most of the kids he grew up with pursued hip-hop, adopting rap names. However, it’s no coincidence that Charles chose the name BLKBOK, which echoes that of one of the greatest pianists and composers of all time. The tag is also an apt reflection of the elements that have contributed to the artist’s identity and symbolizes his colorful journey from pop and hip-hop culture to his critically acclaimed, neo-classical debut album Black Book, and various Mixtape projects and collaborations.

Mare started playing piano at age 3, and at age 5 was featured on Iowa City Public Television playing piano with an orchestra. Mare attended Indiana University, studying jazz piano, and went on to receive an M.A. at William Paterson in composition and jazz arranging, studying with Jim McNeely.
In 2020 Mare released an album featuring original songs for voices and string quartet called “The Moon is Always Full.” Mare is releasing another album in September 2023 featuring all songs about water and embracing change. After studying extensively and playing Classical, Jazz, Brazilian, Balkan, and Experimental styles, Mare now likes to write dreamy, hopeful songs of nature and justice.

Fern Maddie is a balladeer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist based in Central Vermont (N’dakinna). Her songs -- performed with clawhammer banjo, guitar, and clear, soulful vocals -- explore themes of trauma, grief, and renewal. Fern’s modern interpretations of traditional ballads have earned national and international acclaim: her debut album, Ghost Story, was named #2 of The Guardian’s Best Folk Albums of 2022 and was listed on NPR’s Best Roots Music of the year.
Fern’s unique sound is the child of many influences: Old-Time string band music, the revivalist balladeers of the 60s and 70s, dark country, experimental folk-rock, and the modern trad renaissance(s). Her sensibilities have been compared to the music of June Tabor, Kate Rusby, Sharon Van Etten, and Joni Mitchell.
