Here is our most recent audit of 60 AHU’s for a large Community College. Many of the AHUs had significant growth but just because it’s not visible, does not mean it’s not there. Most of our clients already have UV in place prior to us working with them. When they allowed us an in-person meeting to explain how UV systems work, they found that their current systems had no design basis nor were there any measurement and verification processes. The end user should always have a design document for each AHU/RTU that shows the average UV intensity delivered on the coil face (if the system is installed downstream of the cooling coil) and further it should provide data on the “fly-by” disinfection rate (Log Reduction) of the target pathogen. In our experience of auditing existing UV installations and speaking to the Facility Directors at various building types including hospitals, we have yet to find one where they know what the design intent was, are in possession of the design documents, and have a method for measurement and verification. It is very unfortunate that this is the case as the Facility Directors are trusting the vendor to do the right thing and have the knowledge to do so.
