Fixing the Fix: Auto No-Fault Reforms
You may have heard the Speaker of the Michigan House of Representatives’ latest statement on auto no-fault revisions, but in case the news missed you, he was clear and concise: “At this point, it’s time to move on.” I want you to know that we have no intention of moving on and ignoring the urgent pleas of vulnerable car-crash victims in their time of greatest need.
Just last week, my Democratic colleagues introduced another package of bills aimed at reforming auto no-fault. While we’re paying the second highest rates in the country, insurance companies are raking in record profits. These bills would introduce key reforms to help catastrophic crash survivors receive the care they need and bring transparency and accountability to our auto insurance system.
Thanks Matt--While it is useful to get the word out that we need these changes, we also need to save more home care agencies from going out of business and raise the 56-hour limit on in-home care.
If your representative sends a newsletter with info about ANF, please make sure they understand the TWO big things we need most!!
Auchter's Art: Good intentions turned evil Michigan auto owners did not create the harsh mistakes generated by the 2019 no-fault insurance reform law — the insurance companies and the state government did.
Companies cut off auto no-fault patients from care due to new law This week Republican State Speaker of the House Jason Wentworth announced he is done considering repealing the 45% cut in insurance coverage for catastrophic crash survivors.
"We applaud the Michigan Health & Hospital Association for their efforts to protect auto crash victims and ensure that all Michiganders receive the quality, accessible healthcare they deserve."

"It has destroyed my life," a car crash survivor says of changes to Michigan's car insurance law Brian Woodward was one of the success stories envisioned by Michigan's old no fault law, which aimed for "maximum recovery." Now, under new law, he's lost nearly everything.
Opinion | Reform Michigan auto insurance law before more of us die | Bridge Michigan Because of the 45 percent cut to reimbursements, I’ve had to leave my home for facilities that are short staffed and cannot help me when I need assistance. Sometimes it’s like being a prisoner.

It is with deep sadness we share the news that Jim Richert, Chief Asset Management Officer, unexpectedly passed away early this morning Wednesday, January 19, 2022, surrounded in love by his family. After growing up involved in the family business, Jim graduated from Adrian College and went on to own New Mill Construction and work in the trade show exhibit industry before joining Special Tree in 2004. Jim headed up the Facilities Maintenance Team, moved on to Property and Fleet Management, and most recently served as Chief Asset Management Officer. Jim was a tireless advocate for those with brain injury. He passionately worked to advocate for legislation to protect the rights of TBI survivors, and served on the Board of the MBIPC - Michigan Brain Injury Provider Council for many years. Jim was a friend to all and will be deeply missed. Funeral arrangements have not yet been made.
Please keep Jim’s wife and children and the entire Richert Family in your thoughts and prayers.
Good news on this Wednesday evening! The first round of water bacteria testing is negative. The second round of samples has been taken and we should have results late tomorrow! Until then, the Boil Water Advisory remains in effect for those impacted. Thank you for your patience, Novi; you all are the best!
Thanks,
BOIL WATER UPDATE: Our partners at the Great Lakes Water Authority have shared via social media that they have isolated the leak that caused pressures to drop in the regional system and are working to implement a repair. The leak occurred during work to return its 48-inch water transmission main along 14 Mile Road back to normal service. The first round of water testing has been completed and we are awaiting results. If the test is negative then a second round of testing will take place. At this time, we are looking at late Thursday or early Friday before the Boil Water Advisory is lifted.
A recent survey commissioned by the Brain Injury Association of Michigan, and conducted by MPHI, a non-profit public health institute, has found that the new No-Fault Auto Insurance law’s 45% cut in reimbursements for catastrophic care has already affected more than 1,500 patients, eliminated more than 3,000 jobs, and closed down more than 20 organizations that cared for brain injury survivors.

Our Story
Medical Alternatives was started in 1988, with the premise of providing our persons served a true home they could thrive in, and live the life they chose.
While working at another program as a Speech Pathologist I was able to witness their day to day lives first hand. Although they were provided all their amenities and good care, I always felt something was missing. It was the intimacy that was lacking, knowing each individual and what they required to make their life worthwhile.
It was then I decided to venture out to open Medical Alternatives residential living, for the Traumatic Brain Injured These residential places were places they would be safe and could express their individual likes dislikes and wants. I strived to provide this type of environment to each person in our program.
Since staring in 1988, Medical Alternatives has grown substantially and has the ability to offer more to our persons served. Currently, we shave 3 residential living spaces and offer semi independent living for those who require less support. We also have Medical Alternative Rehabilitation center offering Physical Therapy, Aqua Therapy, and specializing in dry needling.
