Blank-Fest

It's about the homeless. Nothing more, Nothing less

Romance (A Poem by Ms. Yvonne Sotomayor, Poeta, NYC) 08/06/2024

An often overlooked video that I did for Yvie, a few years back, is the one I cobbled together from personal photos and assorted random home-shot highlights, dating back to the beginning of our relationship for “Romance”; a piece from her debut EP, “Radical Chica”.

We got away from NYC and the usual insanity that surrounds our lives almost two weeks ago, spending nearly all our free time laying on the tranquil Beach, on the Crystal Coast, off the breathtaking North Carolina shoreline. To celebrate, we released “Tired”, an equally breathtaking poetry vid for another selection off this same iTunes collection, the morning of the day we left for our R&R. “Tired” was shot over the last couple years at this very same locale. Personally, I can’t get enough of it (so be warned: I will be reposting, repeatedly!), but on what was our last beach day - for now - I casually reminded my blushing bride that her latest was not her only beach-centric effort.

“Really?”, she asked. (You see? Even SHE had forgotten about this production - which is understandable because so did I - and I shot and edited the whole nine yards!). “Yep!”, I answered as I handed my iPhone with everything cued up on YouTube over to her. Between sips of white wine we both listened and watched as the soft music cradled her expressive prose - taking it all in, all over again.

I have to admit - for what was at the time considered a knock-off, this loving showcase holds up pretty well. It’s something I’m still proud to share with my friends, here, as I’m being “chauffeured” back in to our beloved Metropolis for the first time in 11 days.

Ah, it’s good to be back - but it’s also good to look back, occasionally, too.

Here’s to our ongoing adventure - and loving every minute of it! 💕

With Yvonne Sotomayor

Tired (Spoken Word by Ms Yvonne Sotomayor, Poeta, NYC) 07/26/2024

Thanks for checking back here this morning - so, are you ready for Yvonne’s new video?!?

THIS one was definitely a labor of love!

It started two years ago, while we were on vacation at Atlantic Beach in Morehead City, NC. Morehead City is a wonderful place with perfect beaches with perfect water. Soon enough we’ll be there again. To say we love it there is a huge understatement.

We usually get up early, head out to do NOTHING all day but lie in the sun, hit the waves and count the minutes until we can put our beach chairs out right where the water kisses the shore and pour our 5 o’clock glass of wine. Heaven!

One afternoon, either right before or right after our 5 o’clock respite, we were walking on this dock, overlooking everything and - just like that, inspiration struck.

Yvie looked beautiful. I turned my iPhone on her; “Quick, recite a few lines from one of your poems!”. “Which one?”, she asked.

Up to that point of the 6 pieces on her debut EP, “Radical Chica”, she had poetry videos for 4 of them: “When The Ceiling Meets The Floor”, “Shrunken”, “Platform Babe” and “Romance”. We still want to do one for “Bile”, but for that we’ll need a full electric band and a whole soundstage.

That left “Tired”.

Which was a shame because it’s a great selection: expressive imagery, a kick-ass backing track (“Be Cool But Don’r Freeze”, featuring two great friends from back in my EMI days: Stacy Rock on keys and her hubby, Randall Leddy on the reeds, not to mention my homeboys, Paul Zlotucha on drums and Baghdaddio emeritus, John Sidoti on bass - it’s about as close to anything jazz I’ll ever do in the studio!).

But it’s Yvie’s VOICE that shines here. She purrs, she’s playful. Muy sexy. It’s just an exemplary recording that gets overlooked when compared to the rest of her catalog.

This vid should change that.

I don’t know, but something that day just clicked. My Beloved looked seductive, beautiful beyond compare. It was just magic. And since this was all impromptu, with absolutely NO prep, whatsoever, we took several random shots in between her listening to the original recording on HER iPhone.

And yet, it somehow works.

And how! Yes, it took me a million years to edit it. I kept getting pulled off the project for any one of 9 billion other things - but I finally sucked it up and got it done. And, in the end, I was surprised at how quickly it fell together. In fact, I’m sorry I let this edit intimidate me so much that I kept delaying it. I guess, in the end, I built it up to be some big monumental thing, when I should have just let the karma and momentum carry me.

I, personally love it. I hope you all do, too.

And before I close here, we’d both like to dedicate this poetry vid to our dear friends, Dave and Eileen Dunlap. To say that our hearts are full with gratitude is likewise an understatement. Your friendship, generosity and love is a major reason this video got made. We remain, humbled, awed and grateful - in a word (or two): Thank You!

"Neil's In Rehab" - The Baghdaddios live at Otto's, NYC, 2009 05/31/2024

Once again, we’d like to invite all our friends out to see us for F-R-E-E, free, free, FREE @ tomorrow’s RiverArts Festival Tour in lovely, sunny Westchester County, NY!

This is our third year back at this incredible collection of diverse talent, spread out all throughout this historic section of the Hudson Valley. Most of the performances (like mine, with The Baghdaddios) will be outside - and the weather appears to be AWESOME for this late-Spring Saturday!

My incredible Better Half, Yvonne, will play one of the rare indoor performances at the Upstream Gallery (8 Main St in Hastings on Hudson) - she played there last year and this place was such a cool space that we’ve been back multiple times for various openings. The people there are hip AND cultured and it’s the perfect backdrop for my Honey’s unique presentation of bilingual spoken word. She’ll be kickin’ it there at 2PM (& I’ll be backing her on acoustic guitar - just like her shows, earlier this year out West in Colorado, Vegas, Cali and AZ!).

After that, we gotta jet cross-county to Dobbs Ferry, where Los Baghdaddios will be playing in front of the historic Keeper’s House (15 Walnut St). This place was built in the early 1800s and is now designated as an historic landmark, open to the public. We’re looking forward to bringing our full electric set - with a few surprises - to an outdoor crowd at 5PM!

As for the video, here: YES it’s from 15 years ago - but we haven’t lost anything off our proverbial fastball. It’s going to be a challenge, playing old school punk for a family-friendly crowd but we’re looking forward to bringing as much energy as we always have. Even though this was shot off a glorified security camera set-up and the sound is less than (ahem) stellar, you get a taste of the inmates-take-over-the-asylum vibe on full display here with the anthemic “Neil’s In Rehab”.

We’ll be delivering the fun in bucketfuls, tomorrow. We hope to see our friends happy faces out in that crowd!

After that? Stick around. We may have more tricks up our sleeve. You never can tell………

"Neil's In Rehab" - The Baghdaddios live at Otto's, NYC, 2009 Poor Lighting. Poor video quality. Poor audio. Mic distorts out. Lead guitarist couldn't make it (Nestor was gettin' BUSY!). PERFECT! Whenever you play...

Ms. Yvonne Sotomayor LIVE @ The RiverArts Music Tour 2021 05/30/2024

SO………ready to see me & mein Missus rock out some poetry and song?!?

Yvie and I are super-psyched to be making our third annual appearance at the RiverArts Festival Tour this Saturday in Westchester County!

For Yvonne, she’ll be laying down her most-awesome bilingual spoken word at Upstream Gallery at 2PM (8 Main St in Hastings on Hudson) - and I’ll be playing with The Baghdaddios at The Keeper’s House at 5PM (15 Walnut St in Dobbs Ferry).

We’ll post more tomorrow - but, for now, DIG this vid from my Love’s first appearance, two years ago!

Stay tuned………

This is the official lineup for this year’s Blank-Fest XXVII show:

Noon: Donald Sztabnik
12:30: Michael G. Potter
1:30: Ross Byron
2:00: Joe D’Urso
2:30: Sophia McGlew
3:00: Count Of Nine
3:30: David Tanner
4:00: Tim O’Donohue
5:00: Patti Rothberg
5:30: Cheri Dahl
6:00: The Horse You Rode In On
6:30: Nuns and Posers
7:00: The Undead (featuring Bobby Steele)
7:30: The Guests
8:00: Ms. Yvonne Sotomayor, Poeta, NYC
8:30: The Baghdaddios

I know we’ve advertised for Noon until Midnight, but truth of the matter is that most acts have requested to go on earlier. That’s right, Blank-Fest has evolved in its near-3-decade existence into a matinee-and-dinner-crowd show. I usually schedule my band - The Baghdaddios - for the very end of the night, because I didn’t want to selfishly hog the prime-time crowd all for ourselves. My feeling has always been that if you’re hauling your ass all the way in from long-distance and donating your time and talent to help others, you should at the very least have someone to play in front of - even if you don’t “bring a crowd” (and almost every act does!).

But in recent years that’s changed. Some bands/performers - actually most - have selflessly said “We’re here for you - put us on anywhere”. There are others that make wholly understandable special time requests; some live a few hours away and have to be up early on Monday for work or travel/tour purposes. Or their crowds (fans/friends/family) can’t make it until after a certain time. Totally cool with us. Most of these special requests are general - they give us a window to work with. And we try to move Heaven and Earth to accommodate them.

This year we had a few last-minute cancellations. Stuff comes up, other obligations. We have that every year.

But this year it worked out where NOBODY wanted the 8:00 to midnight time slots - or so it seemed. So “Los Baghs” will be taking the 8:30 time slot as - so far - the very last act of the night.

But that doesn’t have to mean that the show will be “over” at 9.

Far from it.

The place is ours for the night, so - as I said in one of my radio interviews, yesterday morning - if we have people in the building, we’ll still be a rockin’ and a rollin’. In other words, if you have blankets and can’t make it to Nyack until 10:00, stop on by anyway. Or call/text me, or the club (845-353-1355) or even check the website (www.blankfest.org). The way I figure, if we have musicians in the building who want to keep going, we’ll turn the spotlight over to you. It can be just one person singing solo - or a big, multi-person all-star jam. S**t, if someone wanted to grab the mic and do standup, go for it. Or we can all sit around, toast our efforts, put up our feet and/or count the blankets.

THIS is going to be as zen and stress-free as it gets. Hell, by 9:00, the hard part is over. All the planning, promoting, logistics, juggling, problem-solving - all (or most) of that will be in the rear view mirror. You’ll actually catch me at the most relaxed I’ll have been in weeks, once we’ve taken care of the majority of acts. Mind you, we still have clean-up, getting all blankets/donations into storage and the moving out of equipment to deal with (and, yes, we can ALWAYS use volunteers. Always.). But that pales in comparison to the lunacy involved in getting everything in place, prior to Sunday. I always swear that this year will be the last………but then I get to the end of the run, a little worse for wear and tear, I look at the mountain of blankets near the entrance and smile, knowing that we gave it our best. And then I say those fateful words: “See you next year”.

And I’m all in again.

So come on out and catch a little rock ‘n roll, bring a blanket (or two…..or three), grab a drink or even a bite and be a part of an over-quarter-century tradition that has spread as far as America’s Midwest, Europe, down to Virginia and Florida and even up into multiple provinces in Canada and has served as a defining moment in my adult life………

This Sunday, starting at Noon - and going on ‘til “WHEN-EV-AH”: Blank-Fest XXVII, at The Hudson House will be bringin’ it in good ol’ Nyack, NY - where it all started, back in ‘97.

I can hardly wait!

(See y’all on Sunday!)

I Am / Yo Soy (a Poetry Video my Ms. Yvonne Sotomayor, Poeta, NYC) 09/02/2022

Back last Spring, Blank-Fest founder, Kenn Rowell’s wife, Yvonne, was approached re: submitting one of her spoken word pieces for an upcoming annual, featuring pieces by faculty, students and admin from a local high school. Per Kenn: “She chose “I Am (Yo Soy)”, a bilingual ode to self empowerment and awareness. Simple, yet direct, visceral yet introspective, gentle yet firm, this poetic vehicle embodies so much of what I love about my Love’s resilience and spirit. Over the years, as I learn more and more about Yvie’s life and experiences, I come to admire her more. She could have quit on an apathetic world a long time ago. She could have just given up and accepted a compromised life. She could have just been a victim. She could have just resigned herself.

She never did. If she couldn’t get in to the college of her choice, she got a recommendation from a teacher, enrolled into community college and eventually transferred into her original institution of choice. She worked odd jobs. She persevered. THREE degrees later, she moved to NYC. Five short years after that, she bought her first home - on her own. No “help” from Mommy or Daddy. No hand out. NO compromise. She’s not just a survivor - she’s an achiever.

This piece signifies all that to me, and more. When we recorded her for this one, it was only fitting that the backing music for it would be The Baghdaddios’ “Bad Ass” - because, as a self-sufficient, educated and independent woman, that’s exactly who and what she is!

Here it is, finally, something that truly is a labor of love on both our parts: the official poetry video for Ms. Yvonne Sotomayor’s appeal to womanhood, the world over and to humanity, in general.

Ladies and gentlemen, we give you - without further adieu………

Today, from 2PM to 5 (starting in 15 minutes!): Manic Kat Records & Colosseum Wrestling proudly presents “Rock ‘n Wrestling” at the Palisades Mall in West Nyack, NY. We’re especially pumped, this year, because this year’s chosen charitable good cause is none other than BLANK-FEST. Yes, our annual Benefit that raises blankets & public awareness for our homeless has been placed front & center by the Event’s organizers! We’ve known Peter James - the man behind Manic Kat - for over two decades. He has never failed to step up for Blank-Fest or, for that matter, any worthy cause. In fact, they’ve been co-sponsors of our annual show, during these past two Covid-hampered years. Once again, special thanks go out to him, Lindsay and everyone else at and on this wonderful indie punk label!

So come on out and catch some punk rock and some bad-ass wrestling moves - Yvonne and I are super-excited to be where all the action is! (P.S. - it’s FREE to get in to, too!).

Peace, Punk & Wrestling!

From Kenn:

Looks like my Yvie is at it, again………

She’s been asked to perform at “Shrine On: A Night To Unite” at the Shrine World Music Venue (2271 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd, - aka 7th Ave. - just below 134th Street, in Uptown Manhattan), Thursday, March 10, from 9AM to Midnight. No cover (or even minimal donation required). It’s what’s known as a “Fun Raiser” - a show mostly for fun and to heighten public awareness for NYCWomenWhoRock.org - however, if one wanted to donate for the cause, it would obviously be very, very welcome!

Organized by Val Kinzler, it’s a night featuring some of the best Women songwriters in NYC, today - plus one helluva bilingual poet!

Yvonne opens the whole show at 9, sharp and will be performing selections from her debut EP, “Radical Chica”, plus a few more surprise pieces. I, of course, will be backing her on guitar. After her, there will be tons of talented artists………some of whom, I bet you even know (or have heard of!).

If you live in the City, it’s SUPER EASY to get to:

From the B & C train, exit at the 135th Street station & walk east,
away from the park, one short block across Frederick Douglas Blvd & one normal block to Adam Clayton
Powell Blvd. From the 2 or 3 train, exit at the 135th Street station & walk west, away from the hospital, one block to Adam Clayton Powell Blvd. Various buses also run along St Nicholas Avenue & Malcolm X
Blvd (Lenox Avenue). The M2 bus runs from the East Village & stops right in front of Shrine’s door.

If yer coming in from outside the City, there’s plenty of parking by the club, either in the street or at lots/garages. So there’s NO EXCUSE not to go, right?

Remember: 9PM, this Thursday at the Shrine World Music Venue. Get yer Spoken Word on and support a great cause!

Hey. Do you like music and doing things that help people who need help? I thought so.

Since its inception, Blank-Fest has collected over 10,000 blankets for the homeless. This is usually accomplished by asking people to bring blankets to a live concert. However, things are more complicated now. So the Silver Anniversary concert will be live streamed and they are asking for donations in cash instead of blankets.

"Callin' It(Protocallin' It)" OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO 4K - Kentucky Parkis, ft. Issa Kamal and Sky Vega 05/08/2021

Tucky Parkis is a friend of ours who appears weekly - along with our very own Kenn Rowell and Ms. Yvonne Sotomayor - on ReW Starr’s online international broadcast. She also was instrumental in helping get our Blank-Fest blankets out to NYC’s homeless, delivering dozens, single-handed, to the Bowery Mission on New York’s Lower East Side, as well as her Church in Broolyn, earlier this year. Tucky’s been developing this song - playing it regularly on ReW’s (who has also been a major part of Blank-Fest’s history!) Program - for months.

Now under the direction of the brilliant Tyler Adams, we have the brand-spanking-new “I’m Callin’ It (Protocallin’ It)” music video, featuring not just her but her incredibly-talented band and some of her best friends - including NYS Assemblywoman Diana Richardson, the congregation at her Church (the John Hus Moravian Church in Brooklyn) and - most importantly - our front line workers, who need MORE of this kind of call out!

You can see Kenn & Yvonne toward the end of the video - their segment was self-shot RIGHT before they went on stage in Wilmington, DE, the night b4 Kenn’s birthday - marking the 24th State Ms Sotomayor has performed her poetry in. We’re just SO PROUD AND HONORED to have Kenn & Yvonne included in this cheerful and great production! Thank you Tucky and Tyler - now everybody CHECK THIS OUT!

To Sir, with Love - The ReWlettes 01/23/2021

Blank-Fest co-founder Kenn and his wife, Yvonne had both been in and out of sick bed for the past week (thankfully, it was nothing bad and both are up, about and ready to rock!) - in the interim, some of our friends did a wonderful thing: if you know Rew Starr, she fronted the ReWlettes to not only record but create a muy entertaining music video, covering the classic 60’s hit by Lulu, “To Sir With Love”. We both ask you to check it out for two VERY important reasons. Not only is it a kick-ass production which we’d like all our friends to check out but for every YouTube view, 10 Cents gets donated to the Feed The Children Fund, up to a thousand bucks. You have until December to drive the play count up - so view it now and often - it won’t cost you a penny, but it’ll SO go to a more-than-worthwhile cause! As an organizer for past charitable endeavors like “Gods Love We Deliver”, as well as being a veteran of several Blank-Fest shows (including our most recent, online, one) ReW has MORE than thrown down for the less fortunate over the years, so we hope all of our friends can send a little love her way! Also, mad props to our friend Anne Husick yeah another Blank-Fest veteran, who brings it on bass here, as well. And a special Canadian champagne toast to Paul Richmond (aka: ZEST!), who has been the figurative wind-beneath-this-project’s-wings. A HUGE round of applause for all involved - but if you can’t applaud at least contribute by viewing and passing on and/or reposting! Cool?
