๐๐ Library Card Sign-Up Month Celebration? ๐๐
As we continue to celebrate Library Card Sign-Up Month, we asked our OFPL staff how they would describe their jobs at the library to someone else. Hereโs what they had to say:
๐ฌ โIt surprises me every day! I meet new people and learn new things constantly. And I talk to children all day.โ
๐ฌ โI make sure the rest of the team has all the tools, resources, support, and training they need to do an excellent job.โ
๐ฌ โWhen I say I work in a library, a lot of people think of stuffy, unfriendly buildings and serious-faced librarians shushing patrons. Thatโs not how public libraries work anymore! I tell people that I help maintain and grow our collection, plan events, assist with copies, faxes, using computers, and finding items, and answer lots of questions about our resources. We offer so much more than you might expectโhotspots, Rokus, video games, bestsellers, graphic novels, and so much more! We also provide a seed library, a diaper bank, book clubs, craft groups, free notary services, resume help, and free audiobooks for blind patrons or those with low vision.โ
Our library is a vibrant community hub with something for everyone. If you havenโt yet signed up for your library card, now is the perfect time to dive into all the amazing resources and opportunities we offer!

๐๐ Celebrating Library Card Sign-Up Month! ๐๐
As part of our Library Card Sign-Up Month festivities, weโre shining a spotlight on what makes working at OFPL so special. We asked our wonderful staff what they enjoy most about their roles here, and hereโs what they had to say:
๐ฌ โThe people! We have a lovely community in O'Fallon and the nicest people on staff.โ
๐ฌ โHelping people. Although my favorite task is putting items on the Hold Shelf.โ
๐ฌ โI'm passionate about accessibility and believe libraries are at the forefront of accessibility. Nothing is more exciting than finding new ways to help patrons find what they need and want: from tech help to study guides to the book everyone's raving about.โ
๐ฌ โMy current favorite part of working at the library is remembering our regular patrons. There are some people who come in every week, and I've gotten to know their names and what they like to read. I think there's something special about having that connection and watching them open up over time.โ
Weโre grateful for our amazing staff and the vibrant community we serve. If you havenโt signed up for your library card yet, nowโs the perfect time to join in on the excitement and discover everything our library has to offer!

๐๐ Celebrating Library Card Sign-Up Month! ๐๐
As we continue to celebrate Library Card Sign-Up Month, we asked our amazing OFPL staff why having a library card is so important. Here are some of their insightful responses:
๐ โI guarantee I am dating myself, but library cards (and the books you get access to thanks to your library card) are way better than Internet access (insert eyeroll). The right answers cannot always be found online and sorting through hundreds of websites that have no real fact-checking is a total waste of time.โ
๐ โHaving a library card is important because it can allow you to explore and learn about new subjects. Library cards provide access to a variety of resources, not just books, but ukuleles, telescopes, and even sewing machines!โ
๐ฒ โA library card makes learning and fun affordable! I could never afford to pay for the telescope, all the books, board games, movies, or video games I checked
out just this year, but my library card gives me valuable opportunities to learn, to unwind, and to spend time with my loved ones.โ
๐ โA library card is like a key to endless possibilities. You can learn new stuff, discover new worlds and meet new people.โ
๐"Access to information and joy! The library takes away hurdles that keep struggling communities from learning. Reading and having solid choices for
materials can help teach you empathy, new skills, and so much more. Plus it is just FUN!"
Your library card is your gateway to a world of discovery and adventure! Weโd love to hear from you! Why is having a library card important to you? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

What kidโs classic is your favorite? Let us know!
"As a shy, introverted, scholarly child (long ago) I don't know what I would have done without libraries! My family moved often. I was always the new kid in town. The library always offered me my first and most important friendship: the place where I felt right at home. I still feel that way today, about libraries." โ Lois Lowry

Today, we pause to remember and honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001. Patriot Day is a time for reflection, remembrance, and appreciation for the bravery of first responders and the resilience of our nation.
Letโs take a moment to reflect on the impact of that day, pay tribute to those who were affected, and come together in unity. Our thoughts are with the families and communities who continue to carry the memory of that day with them.
๐ If you could have a library card for any fictional library, which one would you choose and why? (Hogwarts, anyone?)
