Cyberbullying Linked to Increased Depression and PTSD
Cyberbullying is a growing problem among adolescents globally. A new study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry finds that victims of cyberbullying may develop depression and PTSD as a result.
“Even against a backdrop of emotional challenges in the kids we studied, we noted cyberbullying had an adverse impact. It’s real and should be assessed,” said Philip D. Harvey, Ph.D., professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
We couldn’t agree more. It’s so important that we support the mental health needs of children and young adults.

Virginia House and Senate pass bills to help first responders with PTSD
Yet another state recognizes the effects of long-term exposure to trauma that first responders endure. Virginia’s House and Senate recently passed bills to expand workers’ compensation and treatment for first responders with PTSD.
Dr. Eugene Lipov has treated many first responders who develop the physical and mental side effects of PTSD from their work.
A 2018 SAMHSA report found that 30% of first responders – police officers, paramedics, EMTs and firefighters – develop mental health conditions, including depression and PTSD.
"I’m encouraged to see another state legislature take on this important issue," said Dr. Lipov.

Top BBC correspondent steps down, suffering from PTSD
We're always moved and inspired by people willing to share their struggles with PTSD and trauma-related mental health conditions in the public sphere.
We recently read about BBC Africa’s Fergal Keane, who announced he’s stepping down from his role after years of battling PTSD from reporting on global conflicts.
We hope Keane finally finds the effective treatment he deserves. Like Keane, many trauma-related symptom sufferers undergo years of therapy or prescription drug use with little symptom improvement.

Trauma of Miscarriage May Trigger PTSD
Women that suffer the traumatic experience of miscarriage may be susceptible to developing trauma-related mental health symptoms and conditions, such as PTSD, European researchers have found.
In fact, roughly 20% of women whoexperience a miscarriage are expected to develop , typically lasting for at least nine months.
It’s important that medical professionals across different disciplines, including OBGYNs, are aware of the signs and symptoms of trauma-related conditions. That way, they can connect their patients with the care and treatment they need as early as possible.

Is the traditional approach to treating service members with PTSD working? - SGB PTSD
Is the traditional approach to treating service members with PTSD working? Not yet, but there are some promising new developments.
The military is working hard to advance its understanding of PTSD to raise the standard of care.
While traditional PTSD treatments, ranging from $6,000 to $30,000 a year per patient, including psychotherapy and pharmaceutical drugs, are often ineffective and take months or even years to take effect, there are some promising alternatives, like the Stellate Ganglion Block.
I’m excited to see the military increasingly exploring the use of this procedure as a safe and effective treatment to help our service members battling PTSD.

If you or someone you know has just gone through a dangerous or traumatic event, there are some things that may promote post-trauma recovery.
The National Institute of Mental Health suggests these:
- Reach out to friends and family;
- Find a support group;
- Have a positive coping strategy; and
- Being able to act and respond effectively even when afraid.
This is great post-trauma advice.
If, however, you notice the symptoms of PTSD developing, such as flashbacks, avoidance, anxiety, angry outbursts, difficulty sleeping, and depression, see your medical provider for professional advice and care.
Is the traditional approach to treating service members with PTSD working? - SGB PTSD
While PTSD is commonly associated with military service members, it’s often overlooked just how pervasive the problem is.
Did you know that service members are 15 times more likely to develop PTSD than their civilian counterparts?
Given how at risk this community is, we must constantly ask ourselves are we doing enough to protect our service members from the effects of mental health conditions? Is the traditional approach to treatment working?

Nearly 2 million Hong Kong residents are estimated to have developed PTSD symptoms since the protests began according to a study from the University of Hong Kong.

Dr. Eugene Lipov has worked with several mass shooting survivors who develop PTSD.
It’s tragic to see these individuals survive something so horrific, only to suffer day-in and day-out with the symptoms of PTSD, including depression, anxiety, avoidance and panic attacks.
In the wake of the Virginia Beach mass shooting last year, 450 city employees have filed for workers’ compensation for health benefits.
While insurers, employers, cities and states across the country differ in their approach to work-related PTSD, providing meaningful compensation and support is critical to the mental health of employees.
We hope these individuals are able to get the medical help they need and deserve.
Sometimes heart health issues can be associated with PTSD and new research suggests that how these conditions affect one another may be even more nuanced than originally understood.
A study from Columbia University finds that the trauma of experiencing a heart attack can sometimes lead to PTSD. Even more concerning, those who developed PTSD are at two times the risk of having a second heart attack.
Nearly 19% of heart attack victims studied showed signs of PTSD. These people were more than twice as likely to not take medication prescribed to treat the cause of the heart attack.
This shows there is a serious and urgent need to treat heart attack victims that experience PTSD.
Procedures like the Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) can provide rapid and effective symptom relief and help these individuals avoid a second heart attack and further health complications.

A Blood Test for PTSD?
Could doctors diagnose PTSD with a simple blood test? Incredible new research from Harvard used systems biology to isolate 28 key markers of the mental health condition, including immune signatures, stress symptoms and cardiovascular health indicators.
When researchers tested 29 individuals with diagnosed PTSD, the blood test provided an accurate diagnosis nearly 80% of the time.
This research provides hope to those suffering in silence from PTSD, afraid to report symptoms and risk the stigma associated with these kinds of mental health conditions.
The new blood test “shows promise in diagnosing PTSD by spotting genetic and cellular changes that accompany the disorder, suggesting that this condition is not just ‘all in the head,’” Harvard Magazine writes.
We hope our colleagues in the medical profession take note of these important and revealing new findings.
