Honoring Veteran's Day (observed) we revisit the 2016 Commander's Cup at Oak Brook Polo. This event brought back the Chicago Armory's Black Horse Troop Polo Team, founded by Paul Butler.

The Black Horse Troop originated as the 1st Illinois Cavalry, serving in World War I. They later played polo in the newly built Chicago Avenue Armory. The Troop had a ceremonial unit known as the Chicago Black Horse Troop and Mounted Band. To support their expenses, "The Chicago Black Horse Troop Association" was formed. The Black Horse Troop Armory, built in 1937, provided more space and an expanded arena for fundraising polo events. Paul Butler, an influential member of the Troop, established the Oak Brook polo fields.

In a 1933 photograph, Commander Paul Butler led the Troop at the opening parade of the Chicago World's Fair, A Century of Progress.

Did you know that the Village of Oak Brook has earned the nickname "Polo Town" among the sport's social circles? This name is well-deserved, considering the rich history of polo in the area.

The first polo fields were established in Oak Brook back in 1921, and the Village itself was officially incorporated in 1958, almost 40 years later. During this time, the Oak Brook Polo Club became a thriving hub for the sport, hosting prestigious tournaments like the U.S. Open Polo Championship.

Given this impressive polo heritage, it seems fitting to consider including a polo player or mallets in the Village's insignia. Perhaps it's worth exploring the idea further? What do you think?

Embrace the warmth of this sunny afternoon and savor the cloudless evening, because a dramatic change is on the horizon. Snow clouds are rolling in, setting the stage for a hauntingly gloomy and spine-chilling Halloween. It seems like even the horses have sensed it, as they've been making their way south all weekend, in perfect timing. So, don't forget to add a second, and maybe even a third layer to your costumes, as the weather takes a chilling turn. Us Chicagoans never let the cold blow away a reason for a good time. Let's make this Halloween unforgettable!
