1984 Summer Olympics was held in Los Angeles, California. Artist Martin Puryear created this poster for the occasion.
"I live football. I always knew I would be around it whether that be playing in the NFL or coaching at various levels. God designed this path for me, so when one way was shut down I followed His lead to the next, where I am currently. Through my personal journey I am able to mentor the young men that come through the program and show them how to avoid the areas I fell short in." - Coach BJ
Ernie Barnes was the first American athlete to be recognized as a painter. He played professional football in the 1960s before starting his art career.
Emmit H, a three year program vet returns for off-season training in between Fall and Spring ball at Wisconsin Lutheran College (WLC). By doing so, he stays consistent with both recovery and skills training. Look out for him this fall at WLC!
As a two year training vet and now two year coach, Coach Orlando has grown in his practice and communication skills. He has also been able to plan practices accordingly and grow as a role model to both players and new coaches alike.
Jacob Lawrence created this painting for the Olympics in 1972. Many of his works were inspired by the Harlem Renaissance and he was one of the first Black artists in mainstream downtown New York City gallery.
"It gave me a step ahead of other players in the state, midwest and in college. Being able to actually practice and play football year round." - Jahkai Bohannon
In honor of Black History Month we are highlighting African American artists who have contributed to sports culture. Up first is Romare Bearden who created this piece for the 1976 Olympics.
