Scrappy Doo, a one year old Chihuahua with big ears for listening to all your woes, big eyes that look deep into your soul, a little body to easily be transported around with big heart full of love ready to be shared with you. He will not judge you, but love you just as you are. He will follow you to the ends of the earth. He is ready to be yours forever, if you open your heart and give him the chance.
He is definitely a lap dog, that’s his absolute favorite place to be.
Although he’s lived with other dogs and does okay, he’s seems to prefer all the attention for himself. He would be perfect for someone who works from home or is retired. He is fully vetted and ready to steal your heart. Fostered in Allenton, WI www.nbstr.org

To everyone in Rescue- you'll need Kleenex-
RESCUE EXPLAINED.........
The neglect changes you.
The abuse hardens you.
The suffering breaks you.
The ignorance angers you.
The indifference disturbs you.
The injustice destroys you.
On a daily basis…your faith will be tested.
Your heart will be wounded....
Your soul will be altered.
On a weekly basis…you’ll question yourself.
You’ll question your strength.
You’ll question the world.
On a monthly basis…you’ll fall down.
You’ll get up.
You’ll go on…
On a yearly basis…you’ll look back…
You’ll see faces…
You couldn’t save them.
You’ll learn to mourn.
To grieve.
To sob.
You’ll learn to trust a little less.
To do a little more.
To fight a little harder.
You’ll learn to try.
To hope.
To pray.
You’ll learn to fail.
To succeed.
To accept.
You’ll learn when to hold on.
When to give up.
When to let go.
You’ll learn who you are.
What you stand for.
Why that matters.
Then… at times… you’ll forget why you matter.
You’ll question what you’re doing.
You’ll wonder if it’s worth it.
But…here’s the good news… When you forget…
When you question…
When you wonder…
All you have to do…
Is take a look around…
And you’ll see them.
You’ll see their faces.
You’ll see their smiles.
You’ll feel their love.
In their eyes, you’ll see their journeys…
You’ll remember their beginnings…
You’ll know how far they’ve come…
You’ll remember when they didn’t know you…
When they didn’t trust you…
When they’d given up.
You’ll remember how you healed them…
How you loved them…
How they loved you, too.
And as you look back…
You’ll want to move forward…
For them… and because of them.
In your darkest hours, you’ll look around…
To find the differences made…the hope given…and the lives saved…
Because you existed.
In those moments, when you look into their eyes…every doubt will be erased.
Every question will be answered.
Every worry will subside.
Because in that instant…in each of your hearts…
You both share the very same thought: “Every bit of pain was worth it…for this moment here with you.”
And honestly…no matter what else happens…
Those moments hold all the strength you need…
To keep going.
Rescue is pain.
Rescue is joy.
Rescue is worth it…because they are worth it.
And that’s the honest truth.

Along with a few of the rescues.❤️🐾🐾🐾🐾
I borrowed this from a friends fb page. Both dogs are NBSTR alumni.
So every day we get calls from people. . . they've fallen on hard times, their health is failing or a family member's health is failing. Then we get calls/emails from shelters. . . small scared dogs don't typically do well in a shelter situation, so they contact us for help. If you've EVER thought of fostering now would be the time to step up, we currently are CLOSED to intake any dogs due to not enough foster homes. The picture below is one of the lucky ones, she's long been adopted but Lucy was one of those dogs in a shelter that needed us. We had a foster home and the rest is history. We know we've said it too, I couldn't give them up. . . well. . we only adopt to FANTASTIC people. . . so knowing this makes it easier and yes occasionally we do adopt a foster for our-self, but as someone wise once told me. . .I can't save more dogs if I keep them all.
Please consider fostering for Lucy and all the others out there waiting. Apply to Volunteer at: www.nbstr.org
Lucy says WOOF which means thank you!
Please share this with all your friends.
3 of our fabulous volunteers are driving to Pokahantas Arkansas to pick up dogs from Texas. Each of the rescues that get dogs from Lola’s Lucky Day takes turns driving. We always need volunteers willing to do this and more. Apply to volunteer at www.nbstr.org
Something to share: People often ask whether a dog is housetrained. I struggle with this question because a foster may be house-trained in my house but when coming to an adopter she/he may regress and not be. Really housetraining is usually training the human to see cues and how to respond. Please also discuss with the foster home how you can be successful. I always start by taking them out every 2 hours and expanding the time after several weeks. Praise praise praise when successful with treats. Thank you for listening to my Jane talk.
P.S. if you aren’t willing to start from ground zero please rethink getting a dog. 😁
Hi frens! My name is Patty Poodle. I just came from Texas. I am looking for my new family. I'm really sweet but it will take me some time to settle in. It would be best if I'm an only dog. I love snuggles and ear scritches. I am happy to sleep in my bed on the floor or in bed with you. It doesn't seem to bother me when you leave but I'm excited when you come back home. I'm learning that I have a voice and like to use it. Please apply at NBSTR.ORG
Rescue work is never done. Many thanks to Cash & Olives for allowing us the time we needed to have our board meeting. P.S. the food was great and so was the service.
For everyone that wonders how we foster and let them go, please watch this. Thank you Sonja for sharing this.
Rescue Week wrapped up today on WTKM. Thanks so much to all of our great guests this week, including Wendy Smith of Faith and Giggles Gift Shop in downtown Hartford, providing valuable information on pet rescue during our Open Line show at 9:30 a.m.
June Hertzler (L) and Dawn Haverfield-Swann (R) of New Beginnings Shih Tzu Rescue joined us this morning and discussed their Paws in Hand program. Their adoption process was also a topic of discussion this morning.
Update: Dawn & June rocked it. I hope you all listened in. Thank you to the owners of WTKM 104.9 who support rescues.
Tune in Tomorrow Friday, April 14th at 9:30 am to WTKM 104.9 where New Beginnings Shih Tzu Rescue talks about our rescue and puppy mills
Emotional Support Dogs
We receive many inquiries about getting one of our dogs for a EMS (Emotional Support Dog) / Service dog.
A Service Dog is trained within a certified agency to perform tasks for an individual with physicals needs, for example; turning lights off and on, picking things up from the floor, detecting changes in blood sugars, alerting to seizer activity, guidance for sight impaired, etc. We would not adopt one of our dogs out to an individual to become a service dog. A EMS dog provides comfort and feelings of calm / safety for an individual. There are many avenues for securing certification for dogs to be labeled an EMS dog.
The main purpose of our rescue, is to save the lives of dogs that have been surrendered, abandon, abused, neglected, or in any other way find themselves in need. Our dogs need the emotional support of a human. They need to have their personal needs met, some for the first time in their lives. They need time to adjust and trust. They require compassion, attention and training. Most of all they need love and comfort from their person. When that happens (with time), many dogs do give back that “emotional support” that many are wanting in a relationship with a dog.
Our dogs may only be adopted into living situations that already allow dogs. (Landlords, Condo policies, ordinances, etc. must already be in place allowing dogs in the household.
New Beginnings Notes
Bringing Your Pup Home
All rescues need time to decompress and acclimate when you bring them home. That amount of time varies dependent on the individual pup, their personality, their background and history..
The human however is generally excited and can't wait to bond with their new fur-family member and shower them with love and attention. That excited energy can be concerning to a new pup. Keeping yourself calm and your energy positive is important in creating a safe environment for your pup to adjust.
If you have a mill, a stray, or a pup that was neglected, just going to a new home can be overwhelming for them. (Can you imagine everything in your life being a first time experience? It can be sensory overload!)
Here are just a few tips that may be helpful.
-Talk so your pup can hear your voice, but not necessarily face to face interaction.
-Don't stare at your pup, it can make them feel uneasy.
-Limit their access to the house by closing doors or gating off an area of the house, slowly expanding to include new spaces.
-If your pup is very shy or scared. Sit on the floor (where they have access to you). When they approach, let them smell you. Hold your hand out for them to smell, lick or rub against. Allow them to be in control of how much interaction you have initially. As they get more comfortable start with short pets under the chin and increase your interaction slowly.
-Leave their harness and leash on so you more easily have access to your pup to guide them or get them outside. (It also limits handling in the early adjustment or chasing your pup to put it on.)
-If you have to leave your pup, leave them in a secure / confined space and leave an article of clothing with your scent on it for them.
-Start your house rules right away. Be in-charge and consistent. Schedules, rules, boundaries offer your pup security. They are pack animals, if you're not in-charge, they will eventually step and put themselves in-charge.
We hope you find some of these tips helpful in creating your “new beginnings” for your pup. If you have tips that others many find helpful, please feel free to share them in the comments.

A reminder to all adopters.
Please
please
Please double leash your dogs during this weekend. One on their harness and 1 on the collar or use a slip lead or use a 2nd leash thru the handle like a slip lead. Scared dogs can slip out of harnesses and collars. Thank you!
Hi everyone!!
We have had a number of scammers putting links on our fb posts claiming to be part of the rescue. Please be aware - we do not post links in another post. If you see them please make a reply in comments such as SCAMMER in caps. So they eventually go away. We try to watch for them to delete and ban them from our page but they change names often and keep trying to prey on some eager adopters. Thanks for helping us.
