Before Black History Month ends we want to honor 6 unrecognized Black inventors. Their inventions played a major role in making our current lives today much easier!
1. Valerie L. Thomas, data scientist and inventor. She invented the illusion transmitter, responsible for developing the digital media formats for image processing systems used in the early years of NASA's Landsat program in the 80s.
2. Marie Van Brittan Brown, nurse and innovator. Her and her husband invented a video home security system in 1966.
3. Mary Beatrice Davidson Kenner, inventor. She invented the adjustable sanitary belt. She unfortunately never made any profit from it due to companies rejecting her idea for being a Black woman, and it eventually became public domain.
4. Alexander Miles, inventor and businessman. He invented the automatic opening and closing of elevator doors. And was awarded a patent in 1887.
5. Jerry Lawson, electronic engineer. He was a pioneer for developing the first cartridge-based home video game console system. Known for his work in designing the Fairchild Channel F video game console.
6. Garrett Augustus Morgan Sr., inventor, businessman, and community leader. His most notable inventions were a type of three-way traffic light, and a protective 'smoke hood' notably used in a 1916 tunnel construction disaster rescue.
