Merritt College: Commencement 2021 Congratulations Merritt College Class of 2021!______________________________________________The Peralta Community College District is comprised of Berkeley C...
I'd like to share and endorse this important announcement from our sister colleges ASLC President Raya. I hope to see you all there!:
Hi folks ๐ฑ Iโm Raya, student Gov President at Laney, a community college in Oakland.
BIG ASK ๐๐ปโโ๏ธ
Our district, Peralta, that stretches from Berkeley, Oakland, and Alameda, defunded the sheriffs off of all 4 college campuses last year as a result of the major uprisings in response to the Murder of George Floyd and the organizing among students, staff, and community, that followed
BUT THE DISTRICT IS STRUGGLING WITH IMPLEMENTATION ๐ฃ๏ธ
At Laney, specifically
๎ There is organizing to implement restorative justice processes, allocating funding for housing for students, and hiring more mental health workers for students. All of the key aspects within the paradigm shift from policing to community safety were synthesized by staff, students, and community members and out of this process came the
๎ Holistic Health and Safety Plan
This action plan demands that basic needs for Oaklandโs students be met as a part of the shift away from policing on campus
SO THIS IS A MOMENT ๐ฑ and a
CALL TO ACTION
On Tuesday May 25th, the Peralta board is meeting at 6pm.
I know you all here see that that there are direct links between housing inequality and carcerality. In order to take a truly abolitionist standpoint, we need to abolish all systems in place that deprive people of their basic human needs. Housing discrimination is within itself a carceral institution.
My ask for you:
Consider registering and showing up to public comment on Tuesday May 25th at 6:00 pm ~ 6:30 Pm to speak during public comment to help with applying pressure to get these elected board members to begin implementing plans for safety that includes meeting Oakland community college
studentโs basic needs.
โข script provided soon
Our asks together to board members:
1. That board members begin meeting the need for student housing in recognition of the advocacy, and solution recently passed by the Senate for Community Colleges (SCCC)
2. Board members begin implementing the actions and protocols highlighted in the Holistic safety Plan that includes hiring more mental health counselors, funding restorative justice training for staff, students, and teachers, ect.
PUBLIC COMMENT DIRECTIONS ๐ฃ๏ธ
Those participating in public comment are required to register (no later than 12 p.m. the day of the meeting) for the webinar at the following link:

*Updated time!*
Hope to see you all there today!
Thank you SO much Dr. Johnson for rapid response to yesterday's attacks in resounding solidarity.
That said, it's shocking that NOW the professionals of the College want to take credit for creating the safe space to address these tragedies. After a month of Student Leaders asking for support and inviting our professionalls to join US in creating a forum for students since the local attacks on our Asian & Asian-American Communities right here in Oakland.
We work right beside both President Johnson & Dr. Altman daily, as we have ALL day today. They are well aware of Student-Rep's wishes to support the students in this way, and all it's become is an opportunity to steal credit for the college to steal credit from it's own students.
A shameful act, mirroring our lack of support when we sought to connect with and support our students during the Black Lives Matter demonstrations last year.
I'm glad to see the space being made under any circumstances, but I deeply regret to see it reek so badly of bolstering. Students need support when they ask for it, not a MONTH when it's more marketable for themselves....
