Introduction to “The Nylon Zoo Coral Reef” created by Evelyn Roth and John Davis
Greetings! My name is Suellen Primost.
Evelyn Roth, a world-renowned environmental activist, eco-pioneer, textile and performance artist, has created The Nylon Zoo Coral Reef in response to dire threats climate change has imposed on coral reefs, eco-systems of unparalleled beauty. I am an eco-artist, educator, storyteller and Director of Symba Internationale based in Oakland, California, representing the work of Evelyn Roth, a world-r
enowned environmental activist, eco-pioneer, textile and performance artist. Over several decades of living at Maslin Beach in South Australia, Evelyn and her husband, artist John Davis, have observed first hand the huge impact of climate change on The Great Barrier Reef. Once teeming with life, The Great Barrier Reef, a 1400-mile eco-system of unparalleled beauty, has, over the decades, been severely compromised by the effects of climate change, global warming and ocean acidification. In response to the dire situation impacting this great reef and other reefs throughout the world, Evelyn, along with John, has created “The Nylon Zoo Coral Reef,” to bring attention to the grave threats imposed by climate change.
“The Nylon Zoo Coral Reef” consists of The Nudibranch, a colorful 40' air-sculpted sea slug storytheater that serves as a portable classroom; The Coral Reef Sculpture, also air-sculpted, with huge, captivating interactive marine forms that live on reefs; hand-painted, blue nylon Coral Reef Capes with detachable puppets, plus additional Costumes of Marine Forms such as angelfish, sargassum and seabirds.
