The Hog's Apothecary

A New American beer hall with communal seating that never felt so cozy- all it takes is a little love, and we're bubbling over with it.

The Hog's Apothecary is a New American Beer Hall brought to you by John Streit. Our menu features a regular selection of house-butchered porcine delights and farm-direct produce that ideally complement the most unique and well-curated draft selection in the state of California. We take great pride in using the bounty and beasts of farmers who employ the highest standards of sustainability.

For those of you who were close to us at the Hog’s Apothecary, you may have met my very close friend Brian Caraway or his amazing partner and also close friend Alice Caraway at some point over the years. If you never had the pleasure, perhaps you remember the artwork with fondness; that was all his doing. The reason I’m writing to all of you after such a long silence is because his son (and my son’s best pal), Owen, was just diagnosed with a rare bone cancer called osteosarcoma which in a very short time has taken over most of one of his femurs and potentially spread elsewhere. It really sucks.

So instead of returning to the joy and clamor of live classes after over a year of at home study, Owen will spend the better part of this one undergoing chemotherapy and multiple surgeries. If the scourge of cancer has ever visited you or someone close, you know that the emotional and financial cost is devastating. If you do know the family or if you’re moved by their story, here’s where you can help.

Through four championships, a handful of good runs, and a few dozen awful seasons we’ve watched games live or televised. Tonight is for the Oaklanders who suffered through most of the 80s,90s, & oughts to get here. Let’s bring home one more win before the West Bay gets them. Live @ 6 on the big screen.

Hogstory

The Hog's Apothecary is a New American Beer Hall in Oakland’s Temescal district created by Chef/Owner John Streit. Settling in North Oakland after years in restaurants between L.A., S.F., and Portland, John fascinated about transforming the dingy, nondescript laundromat in his neighborhood into a restaurant where he could match his blend of California and gastropub fare with an extensive draft list featuring the best local ales available.

Our mission has always been simple: Raise people’s expectation of food in a beer-centric restaurant while also showing people that great food can be made better with beer.

The Hog opened it’s doors in 2013 helping to cement the Temescal neighborhood’s growing distinction as a foodie destination in the Bay Area. Our arrival coincided with the vast wave of craft breweries across California. Our menu features a regular rotation of organic, farm-direct produce and house-made delicacies to please the palate of the carnivore and vegetarian alike. We offer thirty plus craft beers, ciders, and wines on draft with an additional twenty or so in cans and bottles. The diversity of our list coupled with the care we give our beer and draft lines constantly has Hog’s Apothecary ranked among the most well-curated selections in the state.

We take great pride in using the bounty and beasts of farmers who employ the highest standards of sustainability.
