Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy and General Orthopaedic Surgery
Dr. Basil Alwattar is a general orthopedist and sports medicine specialist with a clinical focus on arthroscopic treatment of orthopaedic pathology affecting the knee, hip, shoulder and elbow. Dr. Alwattar also treats traumatic injuries as well as degenerative conditions and provides fracture care and reconstructive surgery of the shoulder, knee, and hip. Dr. Alwattar was born and raised in Evanst
on Illinois and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Near Eastern Studies and Biology from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He then received his Medical Degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine, Champaign‐Urbana campus. Dr. Alwattar continued his training in orthopaedic surgery at the prestigious New York University‐Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York City. During residency, Dr. Alwattar served as a staff physician for NYU Athletics, as well as the Alvin Ailey Dance Company and completed additional training in orthopaedic trauma and fracture care at the University of Washington, Harborview Trauma Center in Seattle, WA., one of the busiest trauma centers in the United States. After residency, Dr. Alwattar completed a fellowship in arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital also in New York City. While at Lenox Hill, Dr. Alwattar served as assistant team physician for the New York Jets Football Team, the New York Islanders Hockey Team, Hofstra University Athletics and New Rochelle High School gaining experience taking care of athletes of all levels. During fellowship Dr. Alwattar also trained in the latest techniques in arthroscopic and minimally invasive surgery, cartilage repair, complex knee ligament reconstruction, and hip arthroscopy. In his free time Dr. Alwattar enjoys spending time with his family, swimming, traveling and following both collegiate and professional athletics. Dr. Alwattar is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the California Orthopaedic Association.
