Why Housing Ban the Box?

For 20, 000 Californians returning home from prison, including those wrongfully or unjustly sentenced, the biggest structural barriers they face are in the areas of employment and housing. Without full and equal access to these basic human needs, it is near impossible for people with criminal records to survive, much less advance their human potential. That is why formerly incarcerated residents disproportionately constitute 17% of the Oakland homeless population and the recidivism rate in Alameda County is 45%.

“The only guarantee to a roof over your head is in prison.” -John Jones III, Oakland Community Leader & Formerly Incarcerated Person

The Fair Chance Campaign for Alameda County seeks to help remove these systemic barriers by advocating for Fair Housing policies that will provide new protections for formerly incarcerated residents who are applying for housing.
