We love vacationing there but we cannot comprehend. It’s an island!!! Can’t just drive down to another town. Donate somewhere! My bother is trying to help friends and neighbors.

My brother just found out that his wife and kids are safe in Napili. They lost their home, vacation rental and pets. 💔 please consider finding a way to donate to some of the many people devastated by these fires.

Lovely memorial for our friend Willie Ellis today. Thank you all for coming to celebrate the life of this sweet man. He is missed by so many at Lake Merritt. RIP our friend. 💞

Thank you for the phone calls, text messages and emails. A memorial at Willie's spot is growing but we'd like to make it permanent. Memorial service to honor Willie will be forthcoming.

Thank you for the affection and enthusiasm you brought to your home at Lake Merritt. You will be missed by your family, friends and community.

Today I was fortunate enough to visit with my friend, Willie Ellis. Everyone who frequents knows Willie as the Mayor or Greeter of the Lake. He arrives every morning around 6:30am, meticulously puts his wares out on a sheet to sell to people passing by. Whether it be a brand new pair of shoes, a book, trinket, jewelry (most of which have been donated to him), there’s always something fun to check out while stopping to chat with Willie about the Warriors, Niners, politics, local lake life, etc.

Willie is in the ICU on a ventilator due to complications from a severe attack about 10 years ago. While his lungs are working fine, his cognition is not there and he will likely pass of aspiration and will need to carry an oxygen tank as well as a colostomy bag. Social workers are meeting with his sister on the east coast to respect his wishes and quality of life.

I’ve been friends with Willie for about 15 years, bring him breakfast every morning and he and I have always looked out for each other. I am very thankful made an exception to Covid restrictions and let me spend time filling Willie in on everyone who has been missing him, giving him an update and reading him several articles on the and even getting a phone call from his friend who I was able to put on speaker to talk to him. He opened his eyes slightly numerous times and had tears (or perhaps just watering eyes). 😢
