Land was power and still is powerful Dorathy Barker is one of many African American farmers interviewed by Dr. Gail P. Myers for her documentary, Rhythms of the Land. It is a long overdue story about southern African American sharecroppers and landowners since Reconstruction in the 1860s. It’s a captivating story about their past and present, passion and sorrow, deeply bound to the land.

Hey Everyone, In 1920, there were over 920,000 Black families farming in the United States, although the majority were sharecroppers and tenant farmers. Today there are just over 48,697, a 95% decrease in 100 years. Rhythms of the land preserves the history and legacy of Black farmers. You will hear people in the documentary tell of their family owning thousands of acres of land. Despite the middle passage, chattel slavery, discrimination, and elimination from the American agricultural narrative; Black farmers continued to farm and raise livestock in a way that honors land regeneration, the health of the environment, and the people living in and around the community.
