What’s all this beauty?

Hundreds of watermelon starts 🍉

There’s deep joy and reverence that comes with planting watermelons.

It keeps us connected with ancestors, heritage, and legacy. It’s a way we honor, preserve and regenerate cultural traditions, while contributing to the health and well-being of communities.

We love this ❤️

We love Legacy Food for its color, textures, flavors … of sun, earth, water…

We’re inspired by all of the farmers we work in service with and have come to know throughout the years. This year, we’re excited to serve farmers expanding the legacy, adding microgreens to our mix. This meal, as all legacy meals, pays homage to, and is a prayer for all Black farmers.

Hi Family,

Featured in the documentary is Alvin Steppes. He is a farmer from Garrett Grove, AR and was instrumental in moving the class action lawsuit against the USDA ""Pigford v. Glickman"" forward for litigation. Alvin shares his account on the Pigford vs Glickman litigation, his incredible love he experienced growing in up on his farm in spite of the experiences of discrimination they had to overcome.

Alvin Steppes' oral account of his experiences and more than 30 other interviews will weave a compelling story of love for family, land, God, and community. Rhythms of the Land brings to life a love story seldom told.

Andrew J. Beard, an African American Inventor

Andrew J. Beard (1849-1921) was born a slave in Alabama and was emancipated at age fifteen. The Emancipation Proclamation issued in 1863 ended institutional slavery and opened many doors for this young and talented African American. Andrew was a farmer, millwright, and later inventor. He designed plows and patented two of them. His most important invention was “Jenny Coupler”, the automatic railroad car coupler created in 1897.

Land was power and still is powerful

Dorathy Barker is one of many African American farmers interviewed by Dr. Gail P. Myers for her documentary, Rhythms of the Land. It is a long overdue story about southern African American sharecroppers and landowners since Reconstruction in the 1860s. It’s a captivating story about their past and present, passion and sorrow, deeply bound to the land.

Freedom Farmer Cooperative

When she was 45, Fannie Lou Hamer began blazing a trail that would turn her into one of America’s most enduring civil-rights icons - fighting for the poor, Black residents of Mississippi. Bearing witness to such cruelty early on stirred Hamer’s activist spirit, so much that she dedicated herself to food justice in the last decade of her life. Hamer’s Freedom Farm Cooperative, which she began on just 40 acres in 1967, endeavored to give impoverished Sunflower County residents, most of whom were Black, the opportunity to steward their own land. She thought the American government had “no interest in helping the poor people.”

The Freedom Farm Cooperative spanned nearly 700 acres of land at its peak, a bustling oasis of snap peas and string beans where people lived, worked, and grew their own food. The Cooperative itself died along with Hamer in the 1970s. But a generation of Black farmers is now following Hamer’s lead, believing that reliance on the American state for basic security, let alone prosperity, is futile.
