Gearbox Gallery presents Fields of Vision, featuring the work of Sandra Kelch (Gearbox Juried Show Winner, 2023) and guest artist Laurence Elias.
In this exhibition of mixed media works, Kelch and Elias are in dialogue through their explorations of space, perception and geometric abstraction.
Sandra Kelch creates artworks that are abstractions of urban space. Drawing from both built and imaginary environments, Kelch has developed a visual language of geometric forms, grids and patterns derived from industrial form. Her compositions become metaphors for the city – with their complex layering of textures and voids.
Laurence Elias’s work, too, is formed from a geometric jumping off-point. In this current series, Elias creates work that is characterized by unusual color palettes, and quirky optical distortions of intricate patterns. Creating work that is photographically-based, Elias explores the active nature of perception, as opposed to seeing. These works’ lines, forms and shape present vivid cues of spatiality, which can be difficult to reconcile with their true planar nature.

Opening this Thursday, Jamie Treacy’s solo show Creatures of Duality with special Inner Room Gallery Installation, Feathering by Gillian Garro
Gearbox Gallery presents Creatures of Duality, a solo exhibit of paintings by member artist Jamie Treacy.
In this series on panels and canvas, Treacy approaches the theme of “duality” with contrasting styles and tension between opposing forces.
Treacy draws from his imagination and paints through visuals found in his real life. A lifelong swimmer and new diver, the water represents another completely inhabitable world to create in. The free and open sensations of being in the open water let our imaginations wander—for better or for worse—and Treacy explores this uneasiness often experienced by swimmers in the open ocean, acknowledging its presence and giving it personality.
On exploring new themes and staying curious, Treacy says, “I’m part of a rich lineage of q***r artists that use their hands and minds to forge a space for strange dualities: kindness and treachery; opulence and desiccation; kinship and solitude.” He continues by saying, “Creatures of Duality has an elemental focus and asks the viewer about the dualities that exist within them.”
Gearbox Gallery will also be featuring,
Feathering, a special exhibition in the Inner Room by 2023 Juried Show winner Gillian Garro. In this installation Gillian focuses on safe places– how we find them for ourselves, how we hold each other and how we heal. Gillian assembles dyed and felted wool, twine, fabric, and found materials to create sensual sculptures that speak to her emotional landscape. In the artist’s words: “I am attracted to impermanence, fragility, the way things fall apart and what remains.”

Beneath Ferrouge’s painted surfaces is a world of imagination and serious introspection. Each female character has an intense psychological presence. As a cultural leader in the Bay Area and beyond, Seneferu promotes work rooting beauty in African esthetics as a means to address the traumatizing experiences that public and private domains often create for the Black body which distort how the individual views the self.
For her project, Seneferu elected to present an exhibition of work by Bay Area artist Malik Seneferu, emphasizing his series of works titled “From the Hill and Beyond,” produced across the span of his career as a Bay Area artist, painter and sculptor. “In Press Play: Remain Creative, Malik Seneferu taps into his inner child of early art practice, where he was obsessed with creativity. Because he did not have resources to paint or draw on, he used brown paper bags to make his creations. In a Bayview Hunters Point in the 80s where play became the act of violence, Malik in his early 20s strove to unmask the conditions that were shaping his community through large “Raw” canvas narratives. Then, he established museum-like exhibitions inside his mother’s home to create conversation with his neighbors around new ways to live.
As a self-taught artist for over 40 years, he has used his art practice to push back against the War on Drugs that became a War on the Black Community. He established numerous series of work that reflect an enormous imagination, rooted in social justice concerns that challenged the idea that Black men would either be dead, in prison, or drug dealing by the age of 25.
Now, in his 50s, he continues to tap into his inner child, but with the intention to evoke introspection and healing. He uses his paint brush as a weapon of resistance through color, form and design that also suggest that there are ways towards peace if one “remain creative.””
