Recipe for dreams to come true. Some dreams take quite a while to manifest. 6 years ago today a good comrade posted this. Homies Empowerment Program/Adelante was one of 23 organizations chosen to design a different kind of school. The journey was not meant for us to open a charter school. The journey was not meant to open up a cookie cutter school. The journey was meant for us to persevere. This school took at least 15 years in the making. This dream had to weather covid and a pandemic. This dream first needed to open a freedom store, then a care center. This dream needed to open a learning center. This dream needed to teach classes during the pandemic. This dream needed various architects. This dream needed to open up a farm. Now this dream exists, and it is called The Freedom School of HE Homies Empowerment. It takes a barrio . What lessons can be learned from this?
1. Dream.
2. Water your dream.
3. Believe in your dream.
4. Sustain yourselves.
5. Connect with the ancestors.
6. Don't give up.
7. Stay believing that a new world is possible.
8. Weather every storm, and come out on the other side.
9. Stay faithful and stay steady.
10. Listen.
11. Pray.
12. Organize
13. Strategize
14. Don't give up.

On September 11th of 2023 our collective dream of having our own Independent high school became a reality.

Now we are about to enter finals with our founding class and our founding staff.

Don't give up on your dreams.

What a journey. It was hard to be back on campus 10 years after we fought for and won Ethnic Studies. I am thankful for the Alumni Award. It gave me an opportunity to raise the Palestinian flag at Harvard, where that seems to be a crime. Thank you Jas Fernandez for your kind words at the awards ceremony.

I am very much looking forward to get to be on the campus at Santa Barbara City College this coming Tuesday.

I was very thankful to get to return to Harvard University to the Graduate School of Education. AOCC gave me the Alumni Achievement Award. Thank you so much for this award. They gave me an opportunity to share a couple words and I tried to speak about the borders that exist in our lives and the intergenerational wisdom that we carry. I tried to speak about the necessity to let pharaoh go, to let the Empire go, to let the empires fear that lives inside of us go and to be able to stand up for justice especially right now when so many of our relatives in Palestina are just fighting to live. I stand on the shoulders of many Giants. This award isn't about me but about all that has been passed on to me and the responsibility that I carry to pass it forward.

Today I celebrate 50/30. I'm thankful to my mama to be alive and make it to 50. I'm thankful to be in my 30th year as educator. So blessed for the journey. I don't take a day for granted. Thankful for all of my teachers who have taught me valuable lessons along the way.

Today in some faith communities it is considered Christmas. Part of that story is about a set of parents who are refugees and no one wanted to house them. Now there are many people who profess to be Christians. But many of those folks are also anti-immigrant.
