Musica Humana blues
Música Humana is dedicated to creating equitable relationships with social justice and culture through community-based music with multiple roots.
Barbara Dane, the voice of a movement for deep justice and blues, passed away yesterday in her home in Oakland (Sunday, October 20, 2024). I first met Barbara when as a part of Vencermos Brigade and a set of culture workers we organized a July 26 concert featuring her in a duet with her son, also a renown Cuban musician, Pablo Meléndez, and two other major Cuban nueva trova singers. They all stayed where I lived. I saw Barbara more than a few more times in concerts ranging from Yoshi Jazz Club to concerts to raise money for different liberation movements. When several of us organized a music & poetry tour against the violence in our neighborhoods and communities, dubbed La carpa del FEO: Fandango in East Oakland, where we would set up a PA system microphones on the sidewalk and neighnorhood plazas and have artists painting, poets, teatros groups and musicians perform. La carpa went all the away from deep east Oakland to west Oakland along East 14th, now renamed by gentrification International Boulevard.
Barbara and her son Pablo showed up at one of the Carpa stops. There was a small mixed audience of black and brown people, us; we were singing in English and Spanish, reading sh*tty poems, and talking about how to be better acquainted and take care of each other. I invted Barbar to sing and Pablo grabbed my guitar and then she sang the way only she could sing: with that deep, rich Black-infused voice that had sang with Louis Armstrong and blues and jazz greats. Now, she is white, looks very white (see photo below), and when she started singing everyone's jaw dropped. She didn't look how she sounded. Barbara was an anti-capitalist and anti-racist, justice & culture-maker who could have had fame and fortune. But she instead focused her talents on resistance and organizing for justice and a culture that was rooted in our underdog and working class communities. And of course the applause and cheers kept Barbara and Pablo singing in deep east Oakland for a long time.
¡Viva Barbar Dane!

What do two South Pacific countries, two North American countries, one country in the Middle East, and (until recently) one country in southern Africa have in common with Europe? The answer is rooted in centuries of imperialism and conquest in the ideologies that have sustained them — and in the four-letter acronym “WEOG.”
Five countries — the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Israel (and for several years during apartheid, the South African regime) — are part of the UN diplomatic grouping known as “WEOG,” together with 20 European states.
WEOG stands for the “Western Europe and Other Group.” The “WE” for Western Europe is self-evident. But the “other” in the group is more coded, representing states founded by European settler colonialism.
WEOG is one of the five official “regional groupings” of the United Nations. But while the other four are all defined by regional boundaries (Africa, Asia-Pacific, Eastern Europe, and Latin America and the Caribbean), WEOG is cross regional and represents something else: the white world.
The White World’s Bloc
This will instantly shock the casual reader, but for practitioners and academics in the world of international relations, it’s a familiar concept. The West has long centered its approach to international relations on race. Indeed, the study of international relations began in the West as “race relations.” And Foreign Affairs, the leading U.S. publication on international relations, was originally the Journal of Race Development.
WEOG: The UN’s Settler-Colonial Bloc - FPIF A UN grouping anchored by the Anglo countries, Israel, and European states wields disproportionate power to undermine human rights and international law.

‘The White Stripes singer Jack White called Donald Trump’s campaign “fascists” and threatened to sue after an aide apparently used a clip of the band’s hit Seven Nation Army on a pro-Trump social media post. . . .
‘The move clearly angered White, who rapidly became the latest in a long line of musicians to take umbrage at their art being used as a soundtrack to Trump’s bid to retake the White House.
‘On Instagram White wrote: “Don’t even think about using my music you fascists. Law suit coming from my lawyers about this (to add to your 5 thousand others.) Have a great day at work today Margo Martin.”
‘The spat comes after earlier this week the Swedish band Abba demanded Trump stop using their music after several of their songs and footage of the group were used at a campaign rally.
‘Other top artists that have objected to Trump or his staff using their work include Céline Dion, Beyoncé, Johnny Marr of the Smiths, the family of the late soul singer Isaac Hayes and the estate of the late Irish pop star Sinéad O’Connor.’
