WHY DOES HE/SHE DO THAT? (And why it’s important to BCBAs)
In Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), the functions of behavior refer to the underlying reasons or purposes that drive specific behaviors. Understanding the functions of behavior is important for developing effective interventions and strategies to address challenging behaviors. Here are four common functions of behavior:
1. Escape/Avoidance: Some behaviors may occur as a means for an individual to escape or avoid an undesired situation or task. For example, a child may engage in tantrums or aggression to avoid doing homework or going to bed.
2. Attention-seeking: Some behaviors may be reinforced by the attention or reaction they receive from others. Individuals may engage in behaviors such as whining, interrupting, or acting out to gain attention from others.
3. Access to Tangible Items: Some behaviors may occur to gain access to desired objects, activities, or events. For example, a child may engage in begging, reaching, or grabbing to obtain a preferred toy or snack.
4. Sensory/Stimulation: Some behaviors may serve as a way for individuals to seek sensory input or stimulation. These behaviors are often referred to as self-stimulatory or stereotypic behaviors, such as hand flapping, rocking, or repetitive vocalizations.
Identifying the function(s) of behavior is crucial in developing appropriate interventions. A functional behavior assessment (FBA) is typically conducted to determine the underlying function(s) of the behavior. Once the function(s) is identified, behavior intervention plans can be developed to teach alternative, more appropriate behaviors that serve the same function and to reduce or eliminate the problem behavior.
It's important to note that the functions of behavior can vary from person to person and may change in different contexts or situations. A comprehensive understanding of the individual's unique circumstances and behavior patterns is necessary to accurately identify the functions of behavior and develop effective interventions.
CHRISTMAS TIPS FOR PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH AUTISM:
Christmas can be a challenging time for kids with autism, but there are several ways you can help make it a more enjoyable and comfortable experience for them:
1. Create a visual schedule: Kids with autism benefit from structure and routine. Use visual aids, like a calendar or picture schedule, to help them understand what activities and events will happen during the Christmas period. This can help reduce anxiety and provide a sense of predictability.
2. Prepare in advance: Let your child know in advance about any changes or disruptions in their routine that may occur during the holiday season. Discuss upcoming events, such as family gatherings or parties, and explain what to expect. This can help them feel more prepared and less overwhelmed.
3. Provide a quiet space: Christmas can be overwhelming with all the noise, lights, and social interactions. Create a quiet space in your home where your child can retreat to when they need a break. This can be a designated room or a cozy corner with calming activities, such as books or sensory toys.
4. Use social stories: Social stories are visual tools that can help children with autism understand social situations and appropriate behavior. Create personalized social stories to explain Christmas traditions and expectations. This can help your child navigate social interactions and reduce anxiety.
5. Maintain sensory routines: Many children with autism have sensory sensitivities. Be mindful of the sensory overload that can occur during the holiday season. Allow your child to wear comfortable clothing, use noise-canceling headphones, or provide them with sensory-friendly activities to help regulate their sensory input.
6. Involve them in holiday preparations: Engage your child in age-appropriate holiday preparations, such as decorating the Christmas tree, baking cookies, or wrapping presents. This can provide a sense of inclusion and ownership, and also allow them to practice important skills.
7. Communicate with family and friends: Educate your family and friends about your child's needs and sensitivities. Encourage them to be understanding and accommodating during gatherings or events. This can help create a more inclusive and supportive environment for your child.
8. Focus on their interests: Consider incorporating your child's special interests into holiday activities. For example, if they are interested in trains, set up a train-themed Christmas display or plan a visit to a holiday train exhibit. This can help them feel more engaged and connected to the festivities.
Remember, every child with autism is unique, so it's important to tailor these suggestions to your child's specific needs and preferences. By understanding and accommodating their needs, you can help make the Christmas season more enjoyable for them.
