It's National Pet Day (as if you needed another reason to celebrate the animal in your life!) Still, sometimes reflecting on what our pets mean to us is a reminder of why we cherish the human-animal bond. What does your pet mean to you and why?

Dogs explore the world through their mouths, but unfortunately that can mean trouble when the items they swallow include things like clothing, paper, bones and many other items that can wreak havoc on their gastrointestinal system. Cats often will ingest thread, wool, plant materials and small toys, among other things, and are similarly at risk for foreign body obstruction. On this show, an archive from last year, Dr. Kathleen Ham will discuss what happens when something gets stuck and causes a foreign body obstruction, what treatments are needed and what pet owners can do to minimize risks associated with this problem, both inside and outside of the household. Don't miss it!

The successful identification of animal abuse and deaths caused by such abuse typically involves not just the veterinary forensic pathologist who can confirm the cause of death, but also representatives of various agencies and organizations ranging from animal shelters to law enforcement at multiple levels. On today's Animal Airwaves-Live, Dr. Adam Stern, a veterinary forensic pathologist, will discuss the process through which successful prosecution of animal abusers typically occurs, and how members of the public can also play a role in bringing such abusers to justice. The show airs Fridays from 1-2 p.m. on WUFT-FM. Don't miss it!

Whenever an animal requires surgery, the administration of anesthetic is key to minimizing pain and maximizing patient comfort and safety throughout the procedure. Each case is different, however, and it’s the job of the veterinary anesthesia specialist to determine what type of drug to use, how it should be administered and what dose is most appropriate to manage pain in the animal patient. On today's Animal Airwaves-Live, Dr. Ludovica Chiavaccini, a veterinary anesthesia and analgesia specialist, will discuss the critical role of the anesthesia specialist in pain management for large and small animals, and knowledge in the field has grown in recent years. The show airs from 1-2 p.m. Fridays on WUFT-FM, 89.1. Don't miss it! http://bit.ly/2SBInsQ

Integrative veterinary medicine, along with sports medicine and rehabilitation are a subset of complementary and alternative therapies used in tandem with conventional veterinary care for pets. This unique group of patient care approaches has grown increasingly popular for pets, just as they have for people. On this archive show, Dr. Erin Miscioscia, a clinical assistant professor of integrative medicine, will discuss some of the more popular integrative approaches and how they are being used in veterinary medicine today to treat pain, geriatric diseases, arthritis, and sports injuries along with several other conditions. Animal Airwaves-Live airs from 1-2 p.m. on WUFT-FM, 89.1. Don't miss it! bit.ly/2SBInsQ

Congratulations to the winners of Most Valuable Student and Technician for Rotation P. Kendra Beyl and Large Animal Surgery Technicians Kristen Stammer and Nicole Klacko!

“Kendra Beyl definitely stood out this rotation, her energy was always a blessing on the ER floor. Her willingness to jump in on anything and take direction even in stressful situations was amazing. Emergency and Critical care would be blessed to have her when she graduates, but honestly anywhere would!”

“I would like to nominate Kristen Stammer and Nicole Klacko from large animal, they have been invaluable in surgery and have helped greatly when things didn’t go as planned. They are a calming presence on this rotation and are always offering to help students.”

Congratulations Kendra, Kristen, and Nicole!
