In celebration of Earth Day, we are discussing one of nature's most talked about remedies – rice water.

For centuries, women in China, Japan, and Southeast Asia have used rice water on their hair. It's become a trend in the US, but does it actually work or is it all hype?

According to health.unl.edu, "The thinking is that the starchy water from rice is rich in vitamins and minerals, including vitamins E and B, amino acids, antioxidants and inositol (touted as a hair rejuvenator). It may promote elasticity, increase volume, tame frizz, protect hair from damage and cure dandruff."

HOW TO TRY IT FOR YOURSELF: Take a cup of uncooked rice, rinse it, add two or three cups of water and soak for 30 minutes. Strain the rice water into a bowl and presto – you have a home hair elixir. Some claim you can boil it, while others believe there are benefits to fermenting the rice water, claiming the process boosts the antioxidant levels. Start by washing your hair with shampoo and rinsing. Pour the rice water over your hair and massage it into your hair and scalp. Leave on for up to 20 minutes then rinse thoroughly with warm water.

Our advice: Trying it can't hurt. If you feel or see some benefit, go for it. Everyone's hair is different so different things work, well, differently.

• Warmer weather means ponytails and messy buns • So, what does this mean for your hair? •

Certain hair ties, especially traditional rubber bands, can cause hair breakage. They exert tension and friction on hair, weakening the strands over time. Using them too tightly or opting for low-quality options increases the risk of hair damage.

As a rule, DO NOT sleep with an elastic band on your hair. Having it on all day is bad enough – let your hair loose while you sleep when possible.

DO NOT make your hair tie too tight. Looser braids and fabric headbands can keep hair out of your face without having to bind it.

DO NOT use rubber bands on wet hair. Rubber bands and hair elastics can cause breaking, damage and split-ends, even if they're advertised as gentle or non-damage causing.
