Crabbing in Ocean City, Maryland Weekly Post
https://www.getsumcharters.com/trotline.html
Using a trotline to catch crabs
(Excerpt from https://www.bluecrab.info/ )
A trotline is a variation of a setline. Webster's dictionary defines a setline as being "a long heavy fishing line to which several hooks are attached in series." A trotline is defined as "a comparatively short setline used near shore or along streams." Some other common variations of a setline include limblines, throwlines, and juglines. The Department of Game & Fisheries defines a trotline as "a line without a rod or reel attached that need not be held in the hand or closely attended."
Specifically, a trotline is nothing more than a long line, resting on the bottom and anchored at both ends, to which a series of baits are attached at intervals of two to six feet. The baits are attached to the main line by simple slipknots or by shorter lines called dropper lines (known as trots or snoods.)
As you begin this age-old pursuit you will of course want to get the parlance right, so you don't seem too much like a chicken-necker. Calling the dropper lines "snoods" will put you right up there with the old salts. Also, don't ever talk about "checking" your trotline or "taking a look at" your trotline. You always "run" a trotline. This makes sense because the word trotline comes from the old Germanic word "trotten," meaning "to tread, pace, or run." So when you "run" your trotline you are in keeping with the proper etymology of the sport.
With all that said, running a trotline is one of the most efficient methods of crabbing because it allows the crabber to work large areas of water of varying depths and conditions in order to maximize his catch.
Trotlines are almost always worked from a boat. Commercial crabbers run one, two or possibly three lines up to a mile in length! Sport crabbers should certainly start with a much shorter length until they get the hang of it. Even 100 feet will be a lot at first.

It’s finally starting to feel like summer! We’ve been here, there and everywhere this week. IvySea has been to the South and East. GetSum has been in the bay and up the creek. We’ve caught bluefish, sea bass, flounder, crabs and even released a couple cobia.

Using crab pots to catch Maryland blue crabs

Commercial Crab Fishing
Ready to sit back and wait for the big haul? Using commercial box crab pots could be a great option for you. Using a crab pot has many more restrictions than crabbing with a handline or collapsible trap. Make sure to read about Maryland crabbing regulations before you drop your pot! You can get crab pots from stores in Ocean City or build your own. Many Maryland residents drop these traps from private properties and let them soak for days before melting some butter!!! It's pretty basic. Bait your crab pot with fish, chicken or even bull lips! Crabs are scavengers and will eat almost anything that you would turn your nose to! In our opinion, raw bait works 100% better than just sinking your leftovers so give them something they like. Make sure you have enough line on your trap to compensate for the tides if you are on a floating dock. Make sure to play by the rules, the fines are much more than are want to spend on any dinner!
Visit the Maryland Department of Natural Resources for the latest rules and regulations. If you are a private property owner, it is a free license but you will need to register.

CRABBING 101
Crabbing in Ocean City, Maryland Weekly Post
Using hand lines to catch Maryland blue crabs
https://www.getsumcharters.com/hand-lines.html
The most common method for crabbing is on a dock but can be done on a boat or from land as well. It's probably the most active way to crab and great fun for the little ones as well. The technique consists of tying a weight and bait to the bottom of a line and dropping it to the bottom. Just wait for the crabs to come to it. You can use any kind of line from fishing line to waxed crab line. You can get creative with the weights as well using anything that will sink from that old toolbox in the garage but many use traditional sinkers bought from the tackle store. If you want to get fancy, use a piece of wood like an old broom handle cut into sections to wind up your line when you are done for the day. Attach the line to the boat or the dock. If you are crabbing from a boat it is helpful to set anchor to keep the lines from tangling. You can even use this technique from shore if you want to get a little wet. Let the bait soak for several minutes than gently pull the line (VERY SLOW). You can tell if you have a crab-eating your bait by the way the line feels. It will be heavier and you will feel movement. More active crabs will tend to carry your bait off making the line visibly tight. As you pull up the line, have a metal net ready to scoop up the crab. If possible try and scoop from behind the crab (They swim backwards). Measure the crab to see if its a keeper and place in a container without water. If you are crabbing from a dock you can pass the time walking up and down looking them on the pilings. Many times they will hang out ready to be scooped!!! Chicken and fish are great baits for handlining. Crabbers in some states use a hook but this is unnecessary and tends to make a tangled mess!

Using collapsible traps to catch crabs
https://www.getsumcharters.com/collapsible-traps.html
From a dock or on a boat, this technique consists of using a crab trap that is forced closed when you pull up the attached line. A variation of this trap is a ring trap. It lays flat on the bottom but does not collapse so you have to pull these traps up a bit quicker. If you are a pro you can challenge yourself to pick the crabs up when they scurry out of the trap. The best way is to use a wire net. An easy bait to get a hold of is chicken. Preferably chicken necks that are always inexpensive and can be found at most grocery stores on the eastern shore. Remember that chicken can have salmonella so make sure to keep your hands clean after touching. A preferred bait for collapsible traps are fish shells. Frozen or fresh they both work. You can sometimes buy these from local fish companies such as Martins Fish co. or you can go to the docks when the boats come in and scrap for the scraps! Make sure to ask before diving in, you do not want anyone to get salty! When crabbing from the dock, bait the trap then let it soak for at least 3-10 minutes. Pull the line up fast and see what you get! Put the keepers in a bushel or bucket and tray and keep in a cool place. DO NOT FILL WITH WATER! Sounds crazy but they will drown!
WHAT ARE THE RULES FOR CRABBING?
While on a crabbing charter boat in Ocean City you do not need a licence. Get Sum crabbing trips cover all licencing, bait and equipment. If you are out on your own, it is important to follow the rules not just to avoid a fine but to sustain the population of blue crab in the bay.

Hard work pays off. Depending on the situation either you catch 9 keeper flounder or you earn valedictorian of your class! Yesterday morning the guys stuck it out in the dreary weather and it paid off with a box full of nice flounder. Last night we got to celebrate with one of our mates as she walked the stage for graduation, not only is she beautiful she’s smart and she can tie a knot! Congratulations Cams.
What a full day of awesome.

Spent this week finishing up painting, waxing organizing and testing out the equipment for the upcoming season. Thank goodness the testing phase went off without a hitch and we remembered how to catch flounder. Luckily we had some expert anglers on board just in case. This time together with friends is priceless.
