Front Porch Initiative is the outreach arm of Rural Studio’s ongoing research to better understand the barriers to equitable housing access and affordability. As part of Auburn University College of Architecture, Design and Construction, Rural Studio educates architecture students by working in partnership with our neighbors in West Alabama in the design and construction of both homes and community facilities.

Building on applied learning from Rural Studio, the Front Porch Initiative aims to develop a scalable and sustainable process for delivering homes in under-resourced communities. The Front Porch Initiative’s approach includes creating products that tie home performance to affordability, developing partnerships that extend the impact of Rural Studio’s housing affordability research, and advocating for policies that facilitate equitable access to homeownership.
