It brings us great sorrow to share that heaven gained another artist to paint the sky. Retired JCSD art teacher, Mrs Weems, suddenly got sick and spent her last days in the hospital surrounded by her family.

Those who knew Mrs Weems knew a few things to be true- she believed that God is the center of every relationship, family is everything and art is therapy for the soul. For decades, she guided both elementary and high school students not just with art skills but through life with her kindness & support. She was a gentle, kind soul who loved her students like her own. She will be sorely missed. Paint the skies beautifully.

AEA-Art & Environmental Awareness with the WAMA was amazing today!!!! A HUGE thank you to Robin & Anthony for coming out to share your talents with our students!

SMHS students learned first hand from film maker and story teller, Anthony Thaxton, the ins and outs of photography and film making. He shared his vision and his journey while using the students as examples of how to shoot a video. His experience was invaluable. He gave so many tips and tools of the trade. It was a GREAT hands on session!

Robin Whitfield brought her expertise in painting with raw materials. Her knowledge of raw plants, crushed rocks and fruits & vegetables was a wonderful hands on activity for the students to dig in and experiment with. She shared how to make simple tools like paint brushes from a yucca plant and how she commonly uses shells for water bowls for painting. She exposed the students to being open to repurposing or seeing nature as a source before buying plastics for art.

A big thank you to Mrs Banks, SMHS science teacher, Elizabeth Englebretson from MS state extension center, Tony DiFatta from the Walter Anderson Musuem and Julian Rankin from the Walter Anderson Museum.

We are so proud to share Bryan King’s
website, it went live yesterday. For those of you who do not know, Mr King is a practicing graphic artist who has spent decades perfecting his talent. Through the years, he has developed graphic games, cook books, and now 3D printed art.

Personally, I appreciate that Mr King models to the students that practice makes perfect by dedicating the time to being a true practicing artist. Thank you, Mr King, for exposing the students this amazing genre and representing the Mississippi Gulf Coast with your talents that have gone global.

Well done, sir!

Today is National Random Acts of Kindness Day and the SMHS photography class made Valentine bags for Sailors & Instructors stationed at Corry Station in Pensacola, Fl.

A class of sailors & instructors were put on a 14 day quarantine due to a classmate getting Covid. For 14 days they could not leave their 10’x10’ room, having all meals (sanwiches mainly) delivered to their door.

Since Coach Heise’s class was already participating in decorating boxes for the veterans project, they decided to make a little happy for these Sailors too!

Coach delivered the bags filled with treats yesterday. Today was their first day back with the living, returning to normal duties and they got them today as they returned. This little happy brought them so much joy!

Hooyah, SMHS photo students, a random act goes a long way!

Textile Arts is very much a part of Coach Heise’s 3D Art class. This year, it was fitting to incorporate an art form that is practical & applicable to the daily lifestyle of the student. Embroidery on a cloth mask.

Embroidery is slowly becoming an Art of the past. The students learned about the beautiful Mexican culture and the deep embroidery skills & talents that artisans have shared for generations.

Here are a few students, D. Barnes & K. Miles, showing off their masks.
