"On September 11, 2001, I witnessed the attacks on the World Trade Center twin towers. As a professional photojournalist, I ran out with my cameras to cover the event, despite the danger. When the first tower collapsed, I was caught in the debris storm which felt like the end of the world. As the black smoke and dust cleared, one of the first things I saw was a FDNY firefighter in full turnout gear riding his Harley-Davidson down Broadway to Ground Zero. I shot one frame as he passed through the dust and debris.

A few months later, at an impromptu 9/11 photo exhibition, someone recognized the firefighter in my photo, and I was later introduced to Tim Duffy, who had acted heroically at the site after stashing his bike in a hotel lobby. We became good friends, and when I did a photo story five years later about the health effects of Ground Zero toxic exposures, Tim was one of my subjects. I last saw Tim at the 20th anniversary of 9/11 at the WTC Memorial, but we are still in touch. I provide prints of my now iconic photograph to people who contribute to his organization which matches shelter rescue dogs with veterans and first responders suffering from PTSD." - Allan Tannenbaum, photojournalist
