Odessa woman overcomes heart condition through CrossFit Joni Kouba, co-owner of Mojo Speech Therapy Clinic and speech language pathologist at Compass Academy Charter School, placed in the top 200 in the 50-54 age group.

Odessa Woman Places in Worldwide CrossFit Competition

Joni Kouba was diagnosed with a heart condition and told to get in shape and lose weight. So, she turned to CrossFit.

While it wasn’t easy, her hard work has now paid off. In fact, she recently received some top honors in the world of CrossFit. The Odessa woman made it to the semi-finals of the CrossFit Games and placed in the top 200 in the world.

“It does amazing things for your mental health,” Joni said. “Everyone needs an outlet and a hobby.”

CrossFit isn’t the only thing that keeps her busy! Joni is a mom and a grandma affectionally called “JoJo.” She’s also a speech pathologist who co-owns MoJo Speech Therapy Clinic and works full-time at the Compass Academy Charter School. CrossFit helps her relieve stress, stay fit and gives her the ability to keep up with her busy schedule!

We know the skies the limit! Congratulations, Joni!

In case you didn't know, Wine and Canvas Odessa-Midland does an adaptive class one time a month. Next class is this coming Saturday, September 16th!

Join us for our adaptive art class!!

Time for our monthly adaptive art class.
This class is an inclusive class for kids with special needs and their friends and families.
We have larger easier to handle brushes, dimmed lighting and quiet or zero music to help with sensory needs.
These classes also have extra help from special education teachers!

Social Skills (aka pragmatics or social language or social pragmatic language, in speech therapy world)

It can be very difficult to pinpoint challenges within pragmatic language. Too often, intervention goals are too broad-based to be practically addressed in therapy.

It can also be difficult for parents to put words to what a child's difficulties are, as well. Social skills are very nuanced and subtle. They are often very hard to navigate and master for neurodiverse people!

Here is an excellent resource for parents, therapists, and/or teachers. Melissa Speech Therapy Store has put together a fantastic list of goals for social skills. Parents, you can can use this as a starting place to identify your kiddo's challenges. Teachers and therapists, who doesn't love some free resources??
