Section 11.43 (h-1) of the Texas Property Tax Code was passed by the 88th Legislature and became Effective September 1, 2023.

This new law requires all appraisal districts to review each residence homestead exemption once every 5 years.

Homestead Review Letters will be mailed out in phases throughout the year.

No action is necessary if the property is located outside the scheduled review time frame,
unless specifically requested by the Chief Appraiser.

Homestead Exemption Review Cycle

2027 2010-2014
2028 2015-2019
2029 2020-2024

Property owners have three options to reply to a Homestead Review Letter. These response options include:

Drop off at the appraisal district

Email to [email protected]

Website submission through Ectorcad.org

When replying to this letter, a copy of the property owner and spouse’s VALID Texas Driver’s License or Texas State ID must be attached. The homestead exemption will be verified by our Exemption Department. The address on the ID MUST match the physical address of the residence that is being homesteaded.

No response to the letter will result in the cancellation of the exemption.
