We were honored to present 4 local high school seniors with the Rotary Service Above Self Scholarship, and one student with the Lincoln Don Parkin Scholarship this past week! She represents one of Rotary International’s favorite – and perhaps most generous after the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation – supporters of PolioPlus. RY2022-23 District Governor Jose Velasco considers himself a very lucky governor to have this incredible humanitarian as a keynote speaker helping us “Celebrate Imagination” at this year’s Utah Rotary District Conference on the weekend of May 4-6, 2023.
Sharon Eubank is known to millions of LDS women for her lengthy service on the Relief Society General Board of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but millions of others in need around the world know her as the director of LDS Charities which, since 1985, has distributed more than $2.3 billion in aid and assistance to those, regardless of their religious followings or country of origin, who are hungry, homeless and dazed by disaster. From these funds, no less than $10 million has also been contributed over the years – including $5 million in 2022 - to Rotary International’s polio eradication efforts.
Don’t miss her presentation during the Friday, May 5 session of District Conference which will also include educational breakout sessions and an evening of celebration featuring another special guest keynote speaker – IPRI President Shekhar Mehta - and great entertainment. Other outstanding speakers on Friday will be Martha Velasco and a special video message from RI President Jennifer Jones.

RY2022-23 District Governor Jose Velasco considers himself lucky indeed to have immediate past RI President Shekhar Mehta in Salt Lake City on the weekend of May 4-6, 2023 to help Rotarians “Celebrate Imagination” at this year’s Utah Rotary District Conference.
Shekhar Mehta, a member of the Rotary Club of Calcutta-Mahanagar, has been a Rotarian since 1985. He trained as an accountant and founded a real estate development company, Skyline Group, which he also chairs. But his professional title tells only a small part of the story of who he is. He is also a director of the India arm of Operation Eyesight Universal, a Canada-based nonprofit focused on preventing avoidable blindness. He helped establish more than 15 eye hospitals, in several Indian states, that together carry out nearly 50,000 surgeries each year. And he started Saving Little Hearts, a project that has facilitated more than 2,500 heart surgeries for children from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and some African countries and that is now an India-wide program.
The IPRI president, whose theme was “Serve to change lives” during his year in RI’s “top spot” has also been actively involved in disaster relief work. Among other undertakings, he helped build 500 homes in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

Today's meeting was a real treat! We got a special "sneak peak" performance from Weber State's Opera Studies as they prepare to present "Hansel & Gretl" April 13th thru April 15th! They were accompanied by the Director of Opera Studies, Karen Brookens Bruestle who told us about the history of the production. The stars of the show, Rebecca Schull (Witch), Rachel Peterson (Gretl), Kiersten Langford (Hansel), Ceilidh Argyle (Mama), and Zachary Smith (Papa) are amazing singers and were so much fun to watch!

What a fun meeting we held last week! Longtime members of the Rotary Club shared their favorite memories with us, along with some of the Rotary memorabilia they have collected over the years. One member has been with us almost 50 years! Thank you to all who participated, and especially to Rick Barnes who planned the meeting!

We were all inspired and uplifted by her beautiful message. You can find out more about this awesome organization by visiting anythingforafriend.com.
We were back to it today as we began a new year with The Ogden Rotary Club! Special thanks to Mandy Lail, who presented her spotlight to the club membership, then went on to talk about the great work that she and her employer, the YMCA, is doing in Weber and Davis Counties! We are so glad to have Mandy in our club and look forward to getting to know her better!
The month of December was a month of service for the Ogden Rotary Club! As a club, we decided that this would be the perfect time to replace our weekly meetings with service projects. As a result, we were able to offer help to several community organizations, including The Salvation Army by shopping for specific children, Ogden’s Community Christmas by sorting a myriad of donations, and Catholic Community Service by putting together Christmas dinner boxes. It was a great time for us to grow friendships and serve the members of our community that need it most!
On Wednesday, December 7, PBS American Experience will broadcast "The Polio Crusade," a 52 minute documentary "and worth every minute." It can be found on the PBS website at https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/films/polio/ OR watch / record on KUED-TV at midnight (which is technically Thursday morning).
