For those who participate in “private groups” on ANY social media platform - that does not require you to “authenticate “ to get access - DO NOT disclose or post sensitive information on ANY group pages (even where you have been invited to join). If you are part of a private group, doesn’t mean anything that you share , is protected from others. …(e.g. we know that social media accounts are hacked all the time.) When you sign up to use social media platforms, you are required to acknowledge the privacy policy. But if you post sensitive information, the person who posts the info, is liable for anything they post. If someone in your group (that you joined) posts sensitive info “without your consent”, that is a liability to the group/person who posts the info.

Check and read the Privacy Act for further guidance wrt privacy of individuals sensitive information.

My commentary on The importance of Under-Sharing:

“Managing the information that you post
(Cybersecurity and Risk Mitigation steps)”

Please read your FB Privacy Policy to ensure everyone understands your responsibility wrt posts, pictures and other sensitive information.

Those who manage information for others, (e.g. Hospitals, Physicians offices, Employers, etc.) have a responsibility to protect others privacy, Protected Health Information (PHI) and PII. It’s important to take responsibility and ensure that it doesn’t fall into the wrong hands.

To protect yourself, ALWAYS ask (and get) permission to share someone else’s photo or personal information including , graduation dates, photos, birthdates, etc. Disclosing information about a persons family members should not be shared on social media - without their permission. We all know social media accounts can be hacked; when that happens - your sensitive information falls into the wrong hands - opening up the door for identity theft, etc.

I recommend that if you have not been authorized/or given permission to share personal information about someone - “do not share”.

Enjoy the experience with social media, if that is your pastime; however - “Use care - Do Not Overshare”.

FB users do not set the guidelines on what Facebook does with our information, but when you sign up for an account, you are given their Privacy Policies that explains how they handle any/all information- including FBs interaction with third parties.
